Glacier National Park (Canada) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glacier National Park is one of seven national parks in British Columbia, Canada.
Glaciers cover much of the challenging terrain in the park, which is dominated by 10 peaks ranging from 8,530 to 11,120 feet (2600 to 3390 m) in height.
Glacier National Park is the acknowledged birthplace of mountaineering in North America.

Glacier Maps of Canada (1:1,000,000 Scale) The decision to map CanadaÕs glaciers at a scale of 1:1,000,000 arose from the need of the Geographical Branch, Department of Mines, to have small-scale maps available that were suitable for planning glaciological research and accurately depicting the geographic distribution of glaciers.
The lower limits and activity of the glacier termini were measured from fixed points, and the movement and height change of the glacier surface were determined along a transverse profile of plaques in the ablation area.
Glacier delineation, glacier facies, and surface details are enhanced by the use of specialized digital-imaging and analytical techniques, notably principal components analysis, the TM 4/5 ratio, and a normalized difference snow index (NDSI).

Glacier House was built by the CPR at Rogers Pass, in what is now Glacier National Park, because the grade was too steep to permit the inclusion of a restaurant car on the train.
Glacier surface areas and variations for the Robson [87], Columbia [95], Southeast Lyell [100], Peyto [103], Freshfield [102], Athabasca [93], and Saskatchewan [92] Glaciers were documented using photographic and botanical techniques (Field and Heusser, 1954; Heusser, 1954, 1956, 1960).

 McMurdo LTER Data Sets
The glaciers of the McMurdo Dry Valleys are fundamental to the hydrology and biology of the valleys because they are the only significant source of water to the valley streams and lakes.
Therefore, understanding the controls on the glacial extent and meltwater runoff is fundamental to a process-oriented approach to studying the dry valleys ecosystem.
Snow on glacier ice effectively shuts off radiation absorbtion into the ice, which is the dominant source of energy for melt.

The Canadian Glacier Inventory Project was initiated in the 1960s as part of Canada's contribution to the International Hydrological Decade (1965-1974) programme for a world inventory of glaciers (Ommanney, 1980), sponsored by Unesco.
Glacier numbers were assigned to individual ice masses by numbering clockwise from the mouth of the basin.
As this numbering system was the key to all the glacier inventory data, it was decided to publish it in map sheets which could form the basis of a Glacier Atlas of Canada.
