The Texas panhandle lies in the southern portion of the "Great American Desert" as the Great Plains were known in the mid-nineteenth century.
The river is flanked by the Canadian River Breaks, a fifteen to thirty mile wide strip of land divided by tributaries of the Canadian River.
The agreement gave Texas storage rights to water from the tributaries of the North Canadian River for municipal uses, household and domestic uses, livestock, and irrigation of lands cultivated for use by the home owners and domestic livestock kept on the property.

Among the Canadian's principal tributaries in Texas are Big Blue, Tallahone, Red Deer, Pedarosa, Punta Agua, Amarillo, Tascosa, and White Deer creeks.
