From the 1930s to the 1950s the two senior leagues of the CRFU (the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union and the Western Interprovincial Football Union) gradually evolved from amateur to professional leagues.
The CFL is considered to be a major league by many Canadians, often placing it second behind the National Hockey League.
Although ice hockey is currently Canada's most popular sport, the CFL is highly popular in Quebec and west of Ontario, and its franchises there enjoy a greater level of support than Ontario teams.

On November 26, 1917, in Montreal's Windsor Hotel, the National Hockey League was formed, with the Canadiens, the Wanderers, the Senators, the Bulldogs, and the newly-renamed Toronto Arenas as its founding members.
Although the league was struggling to stay in the business for its first decade, the NHL teams were very successful, winning the Stanley Cup seven out of its first nine years (with one having been cancelled because of the Spanish Flu epidemic hitting Seattle).
It was one minor league, the Western Hockey League, and its plans to turn itself into a major league and challenge for the Stanley Cup that led the NHL to expand in 1967, 25 years after the formation of the Original Six.

The rise of the Western Hockey League, which many pundits thought planned to transform into a major league and challenge for the Stanley Cup, spurred the NHL in 1967 to undertake its first expansion since the 1920s.
Though hockey remained popular in Canada, the sport's popularity in the United States, especially in the American south, dwindled to the point where many considered hockey to be a minor sport compared with the American staples of baseball, basketball, and football, and in some cases, NASCAR stock car racing.
The National Hockey League also presents numerous trophies, in addition to the Stanley Cup for the overall playoff champion, as well as the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl for the Western Conference playoff champions and the Prince of Wales Trophy for the Eastern Conference playoff champions.

Le National was accepted into a new league, the Federal Amateur Hockey League (formed mainly under the leadership of the Montréal Wanderers), and the merger agreement called for le National to organize a team while le Montagnard provided its rink, free of charge, for games and practices.
At the meeting that saw le National reinstated, the Wanderers themselves were thrown out because their new owner wanted to play all his games at the Jubilee Rink (which he also owned), while the other CHA teams insisted on staying in the west end at the Westmount Arena.
