CJFE recognizes that these rights are not confined to journalists and strongly supports and defends the broader objective of freedom of expression in Canada and around the world.
CJFE was born in 1981, and parented initially by the Centre for Investigative Journalism (now the Canadian Association of Journalists).
CJFE also presents an award to a Canadian journalist who, through his or her work, has made an important contribution to reinforcing and promoting the principle of freedom of the press in this country or elsewhere.

Journalists from Ukraine and Gambia were honoured this week with the International Press Freedom Award for persisting in their work even while facing serious threats against their lives.
CJFE promotes and defends free expression and press freedom and grants thousands of dollars to aid persecuted journalists in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe.
The annual award is given to journalists outside of Canada by the CJFE to recognise and call attention to the many countries where journalists face personal danger simply for telling the truth.

CJFE calls on the Attorney General of Ontario to: cease immediately its criminal and civil prosecutions of Stephen Williams; take steps, if the prosecution continues, to eliminate any perception of conflict of interest by turning the Williams case over to outside prosecutors.
CJFE feels enormous sympathy for the families but sincerely believes the increasing tendency toward court-ordered concealment of evidence in criminal cases may lead to society losing its sense of empathy with, and sympathy for, victims of crime.
