She was first elected to the House of Commons for the Yukon in a by-election in 1987 and re-elected in the general elections of 1988 and 1993.
For the next six years she led the Party through a tumultuous time during which the NDP formed the provincial governments in Ontario in 1990, under the leadership of Bob Rae, and in British Columbia in 1991, under Michael Harcourt.
But Canadians, distressed by nine years of government under Conservative Brian Mulroney, turned to the Liberals in the 1993 general election and, as a result, only nine New Democrat Members of Parliament were elected, three less than that required for official party status in the House of Commons.

This witches' brew goes under the name of an "Interim Manifesto of a Socialist Committee for the Organization of a Labour Party." These are the "Commandments" of a new Canadian Labour Party organized in the best Moses' tradition to lead the chosen into the promised land of Socialism — eventually.
These so-called socialist reform parties along with the Communist Party are actually gross political charlatans who have done more harm to the Socialist movement than all the avowedly capitalist parties put together.
But the pseudo-socialist parties and their leaders, those "intellectual maitre d'hotes," with their emotional and confused socialist prattling lead their incipient class-conscious supporters down the garden path with the inevitable aftermath of disappointment and despair to the detriment of the whole socialist movement.

Both parties are unable and unwilling to break free of the neoliberal policy straitjacket and institutional ground rules of the Canadian state.
This has several aspects: the regional fragmentation of the party system in Canada; the lack of proportional representation and the marginalization of many political viewpoints from electoral representation; the under-representation of urban voters; and the failure of the federal system to accommodate the Aboriginal and Quebec peoples within Canada.
This failure of the two main parties has its immediate origins in the organizational and electoral collapse of the federal Liberals in Quebec in the wake of the sponsorship scandal and the revelations of the Gomery Commission about this scandal.

This defeat for Labour, and victory for the neo-liberal agenda, has its analogy in Ontario where three years of sequential one-day general strikes (1995-98) in a dozen cities against the Mike Harris provincial Conservative regime were unceremoniously ended.
Labour’s retreat -- manifested most sharply in terms of concessions bargaining, the curtailment of union democracy and solidarity, and the shrinkage of union density – has resulted in stagnant wages, a declining standard of living, increased job insecurity, and growing union paralysis.
Its ongoing aim is to unite labour and social movement militants to resist labour concessions and social cutbacks, support struggles for union democracy, turn the unions into fighting organizations, advance the interests of working people, and oppose corporate profit and power.
