Light rail is generally powered by electricity, usually by means of overhead wires, but sometimes by a live rail, also called third rail (a high voltage bar alongside the track), requiring safety measures and warnings to the public not to touch it.
Light rail systems are generally cheaper to build than heavy rail, since the infrastructure does not need to be as substantial, and tunnels are generally not required as is the case with most metro systems.
Light rail is also notably low-impact with regards to hard-to-measure quality of life variables (except noise--q.v.), whereas highway construction has historically wreaked havoc on the social capital of neighborhoods where it occurs and leads to cases of alleged cancer clusters and noise pollution in areas directly adjacent to even moderately-traveled routes.

A light rail employee, usually located in a control room environment, that controls the movement of an LRV within a system, maintains radio communication with all support staff, and monitors SCADA and related equipment.
A rail or other structure laid parallel with the running rail of a track to prevent wheels from being derailed; to hold wheels in correct alignment to prevent flanges from striking the points of turnout or crossing frogs or the points of switches; or to keep derailed wheels adjacent to the running rails.

Each of the 80-ton, 159-foot vehicles is powered by two 420-hp diesel engines through a mechanical transmission, and is capable of a 75 mph maximum speed, although maximum speeds on the line are limited to about 40 mph.
Vehicle alternatives were considered and either rail or Transitway development recommended for most routes, while the technology choice for two corridors was left to a later decision.

If a tunnel is used to get light rail from south Bellevue into downtown Bellevue, monorail emerges as the best choice in that segment, costing $400 million to $540 million to build compared with $780 million to $1.1 billion for a light rail tunnel.

TC 4200 is the articulated variant of the CLRV, the ALRV (Articulated Light Rail Vehicle) built by CanCar Rail (UTDC).

During the mid-70s, Canada's Urban Transportation Development Corporation designed a new tram, called CLRV (Canadian Light Rail Vehicle) and 200 cars, built by Swiss Industrial Company (4000-4005 class, delivered in 1977/8) and Hawker-Siddeley Canada Ltd. company (4010-4199 class; delivered in 1979-81) were acquired by Toronto Transit Commission.
The prototype of Articulated Canadian Light Rail Vehicle (ALRV) was built in 1982 and was numbered 4900 by TTC.
The wings around headlight were removed and regular TTC features (advance light, red warning light behind the center doors, chrome grab rail between the center doors etc.) were applied.
