Canadian Health Minister's speech to the Canadian Medical Association
Part of the reason the CMA has been so effective through the years is that it has always had outstanding leadership and that tradition was certainly continued over the past year by Dr. Sunil Patel.
Canadians understand the pressures the system is facing and they want their governments to work together - and to work with providers - to fix what needs fixing.
Canadians understand these benefits of a public health care system and they have made it abundantly clear that they want their governments to fight for medicare, not over medicare.

Canadian Medical Association - correspondence re infant male circumcision
In response to my question as to why the Canadian Medical Association was continuing to tolerate a practice which appeared to violate the CMA Code of Ethics, you replied that enormous differences in point of view prevented the CMA from taking a stand on the issue.
In the course of a protracted correspondence with the Canadian Medical Association on the subject of infant male circumcision, I have gained the impression that the CMA's posture on this issue is informed not so much by principle as by political expediency.
A medical benefits or "therapeutic" justification requires that overall the medical benefits sought outweigh the risks and harms of the procedure required to obtain them, that this procedure is the only reasonable way to obtain these benefits, and that these benefits are necessary to the well-being of the child.

Sacking Of Canadian Medical Association Journal's Editors 'deeply Troubling'
The dismissal of two of the Canadian Medical Association Journal's editors seems to be an attempt to deprive the journal of its capacity for investigative journalism, states an editorial in this week's issue of The Lancet.
The CMA requested that the article be withdrawn from the journal and redrafted as it constituted scientific research, rather than journalism, and the editorial team should therefore have sought ethical counsel and peer review of the article.
What seems to be an attempt by the CMA to deprive editors of the capacity to bring to account those responsible for the perverse consequences of badly implemented policy or wrongheaded principles is deeply troubling.

Section 69 of the regulations allows a medical licensing authority to request from the federal health minister information regarding a specific medical practitioner, which may be provided if the minister has reasonable grounds to believe the medical practitioner has made a false statement under the regulations.
The definition of specialist in the regulations, and the medical declarations in the relevant forms, require that the medical practitioner be recognized as a specialist by the medical licensing authority where the practitioner is authorized to practise medicine, and that the area of medical specialization be relevant to the treatment of the applicant's medical condition.
They must also state that in their medical opinion the benefits from the applicant's use of marijuana, according to the recommended daily dosage, would outweigh the risks associated with that dosage, including risks associated with a long-term use of marijuana.

Founded in 1867, CMA’s mission is to serve and unite the physicians of Canada and be the national advocate, in partnership with the people of Canada, for the highest standards of health and health care.
The CMA is a voluntary professional organization representing the majority of Canada’s physicians and comprising 12 provincial and territorial divisions and 43 affiliated medical organizations.
The first principle of the CMA’s Code of Ethics is “consider first the well-being of the patient.” One of the key roles of the physician is to act as a patient’s advocate and support within the health care system.

 Canadian Medical Association - Marijuana
I am writing to advise you that the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is standing in opposition to the Marijuana Medical Access Regulations, as we believe they create significant concerns for both you and your patients.
CMA does not support physicians controlling access to substances for which routine pre-market regulatory review of safety, purity and efficacy, as required for current prescription drugs, has not occurred.
We intend to work with Health Canada and other medical organizations to assess the impact of the regulations on physicians and patients, and to endeavour to find an acceptable solution to facilitate compassionate medical use and monitoring of the outcomes of that use.

Scully acknowledged that although some concerns expressed by the medical profession regarding the application process were addressed by clarifying the role of patients in the application process, the regulations still place the physicians in an untenable position.

Editorial decisions should not be judged against the particular aims of the CMA.”12 In this context, the CMA President, Ruth Collins–Nakai, more recently revealed that “irreconcilable differences” between the editors and the publisher of the CMAJ were the real reasons for the sacking of Hoey and Todkill.

The minimal negative health effects of moderate use would be attested to by the estimated 1.5 million Canadians who smoke marijuana for recreational purposes.
This means that for anyone who's ever been caught with a stash in his or her pocket, the question 'Have you ever had a criminal conviction?' during a job application or medical school interview can force higher aspirations to go up in a puff of smoke.
Hoey told the Star he expected no negative fallout from Canadian doctors, which is not surprising given that the Canadian Medical Association, the journal's publisher, has already endorsed the decriminalization of marijuana.
