The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame (CMHF) and the Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University, in partnership with the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation, St. Joseph's Hospital, the City of Hamilton/Region of Hamilton-Wentworth Social and Public Health Services Division, is organizing a day-long Youth Symposium on Friday, October 27 in Hamilton.
The symposium is designed to motivate students who are interested in pursuing a career in medical science and related professions and to foster an appreciation for advances in science and technology that support the health professions.
These symposia are part of the CMHF's mission to celebrate discovery and innovation in medical science, with a focus on informing secondary school and university students about scientific/medical heroes of the past and present through innovative and collaborative educational programs.

Canadian regulations recognize medical physicists who are certified by the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine as Radiation Safety Officers for medical radioisotope facilities.
Canadian radiotherapy physicists play a central role in such areas as the design and construction of radiotherapy treatment equipment, the use of heat and lasers in cancer treatment, the theory of radiation absorption and dose calculation and in radiobiology.
Many Canadian medical physicists are also members of the the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM), which was established in 1979 to recognize proven competence in physics as applied to medicine.

Canadians were in the forefront, led by Dr. Wilfred Gordon "Bill" Bigelow (1592C.1653), an innovative surgeon-scientist at Toronto General Hospital.
His pivotal role in hypothermia research and in developing the cardiac pacemaker were recognized in February of this year when he was named to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.
After 5 years of research on the effects of hypothermia on body and heart metabolism, the first open heart operation in humans was performed in 1953.

In 1983, she was selected as one of the original six Canadian astronauts and in 1992, aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, Doctor Bondar became the first neurologist in space and also the first Canadian woman in space.
Roberta Bondar, the second Canadian astronaut in space, retired from the astronaut corps shortly after returning from her journey into space because she wanted to devote more time to her research.
Doctor Bondar is an officer of the Order of Canada and has been elected to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame for her pioneering space medical research.

Despite beating testicular cancer, he was told by doctors that he wouldn't be able to keep up the kind of fitness needed to play top-flight soccer.

He was voted coach of the year in the Canadian Soccer League in 1987 with the Ottawa Pioneers.

He returned to McGill in 1968 as a Medical Research Council (MRC) of Canada Scholar, and subsequently was appointed professor of medicine and director of the Division of Rheumatology at the Montreal General Hospital.
