Its original purpose was arguably superseded in 1973 when the Canadian International Autoshow appeared elsewhere in the city during the spring, closer in time to when new car models appear than in late August when the CNE starts.
Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King was present at the dedication ceremony and over the radio publically thanked the Shriners for the gift to the city of Toronto and to the Canadian nation.
The CNE was not held between 1942 and 1946, when the land and its facilities were turned over to the Department of National Defence as a training ground.

 Canadian National Exhibition Chorus
With the increasing mobilization of Canadians for war work in 1942 the chorus was forced to disband.
It performed annually 1922-34 under Herbert Fricker at the CNE and gave between two and four performances each season with groups such as the Toronto Concert Band and the Goldman Band of New York.
This chorus, accompanied by the Goldman Orchestra from New York, gave its first concert 29 Aug 1940 at the CNE and sang with the TSO under Ernest MacMillan in the fall of that year at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens.

From the early 1920s until the CNE Music Dept was established, the Canadian Bureau for the Advancement of Music helped to organize CNE music events, which were of three main kinds: 1/entertainment, 2/exhibition, and 3/competition.
At first it was called the Industrial Exhibition of Toronto, but the name was changed to CNE in 1904.
The CNE was opened 5 Sep 1879 under the auspices of the city council and local trade and arts associations.

In 1924, the CNE Association hired the architectural firm of Chapman and Oxley to create a fifty- year plan for the redevelopment of the eastern end of the CNE grounds.
This entranceway, built in 1927 on the 60th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, was originally named "The Diamond Jubilee of Confederation Gates." When it was learned that Prince Edward and Prince George would visit the CNE in 1927, the Gates were renamed the Princes' Gates in honour of the two royal brothers.
A significant feature of this plan was the construction of a monumental entrance to link the CNE with the city of Toronto.
