Both national teams languish to a large extent in the shadow of the country 's highly successful national ice hockey teams, as ice hockey is Canada 's national winter sport.
The Canadian team, however, has enjoyed success in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, surprisingly winning the tournament in 2000 and advancing to the semifinals in 2002.
The FIFA rankings for June 2005 have the men's team ranked 83rd out of 205 countries while the women's team is ranked 11th out of 121 countries.

The Canadian national (ice) hockey team is controlled by Hockey Canada.
Canada has been one of the most dominant hockey teams in international play, winning the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union, four of five Canada Cups dating back to 1976, winning the 2002 Winter Olympics, two recent IIHF World Championships, as well as the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
This was because Canada's best professional players were unable to attend these events as they had commitments with their respective National Hockey League teams.

Another interesting result was a signed agreement for the main Canadian National Hockey Team (comprising mostly current NHL players) to play in the new Budapest Sport Arena on April 20.
The Hungarian team scored first and kept the lead throughout much of the game, which was the first in 66 years between Canadian and Hungarian teams.

On June 17th, 2002, I stood in line (twice - once in the morning and once during lunch) to meet and get autographs from the Canadian Women's National Hockey Team, who won Gold medals at the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
The entire team proved themselves to be excellent rolemodels for _all_ Canadian athletes and they made me even more proud to be Canadian.
The entire team was attending a special function at the Hockey Hall of Fame that night in Toronto, Canada.

Surprize starter was the just arrived Tanya Franck from the National team who played midfield in this game.
They dominated this game and should have had a 3-0 halftime lead but couldn't put this team away so a late equalizer was quite possible.
