Kingston's location at the Rideau Canal entrance to Lake Ontario, after canal construction was completed in 1832 made it a vital military and economic centre of Upper Canada.
Kingston was one of the contenders for the capital of the united Canadas before Confederation, but after a brief stint as the capital from 1841 to 1844, it lost out to an alternating location of Montreal and Toronto, and then later to Ottawa in 1857, where it has resided since.
Kingston was, however, the home of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald and on June 13 1841 was the site of the first meeting of the Parliament of Canada.

In the past Kingston has hosted the Darts at CORK and the Hobies at various events including CORK; the1999 North American Championships for Hobie 17's and for women in 16's and 18's; and the 2000 Hobie 16 North American Championship.

A further week of training in Kingston was not in the cards as an injury to Ian kept us on land for the five days before the event.
The regatta itself started slowly with the first day of racing cancelled due to lack of wind, but the second and third days picked up the slack, with nine races sailed in 4 to 15 knots of wind.

We are currently in Kingston Ontario preparing for the 49er Canadians which are being held at CORK (The Canadian Olympic Regatta in Kingston), which will begin this thursday.
In the meantime, Rob is coaching a group of 29er sailors at their North Americans, which are also in Kingston this week, and we will practicing in the evenings after Rob is off the water.
The first being that the boat we chartered for the summer began to fall apart on us and the mast was on the verge of breaking in any significant amount of wind and a number of other things on the boat were falling apart.

After opening the two-day regatta with a 16th-place finish, which he was allowed to discard, Hawkins rebounded with 1-3-1-2-10-1.

So Ok, Its not Cork week in Ireland but this one is billed as the largest Fresh Water regatta in the world.
It spans over a few weeks and has mostly small boat classes but there is a big boat "offshore" series as well.
After a brief postponement waiting for the thermal to fill, racing finally began in "typical Kingston conditions", 10 to 14 kts.
