Canadian Railroad Trilogy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Canadian Railroad Trilogy is a song by Gordon Lightfoot which describes the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The structure of the song was patterned after Gibson and Camp's Civil War Trilogy, with a slow tempo section in the middle and faster paced sections at the beginning and end.
While Lightfoot's song echoes the optimism of the railroad age, it also chronicles the cost in sweat and blood of building the "iron road runnin' from the sea to the sea".

The Philosophy of Railways: The Transcontinental Railway Idea in British North America by Douglas Francis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
This philosophy of railways had a definite national ethos to it, den Otter argues, but it was an ethos that rested on certain premises that might appear at first glance not to be nationalistic at all in the traditional sense of the word.
As this technology was adapted to Canadian needs it added to the national rhetoric supporting the belief that railroads were an integral part of its nation building, and a British North American technological nationalism developed.
With the exception of Thomas Keefer, the engineer-cum-railroad promoter whose pamphlet The Philosophy of Railroads (1849) – of which den Otter’s book title is an altered version – contributed so much to popularizing railroads in British North America, all were, according to den Otter, politicians, railway financiers, or railway magnates.
