AEGiS-Reuters: (RE) CANADA: Canadian Red Cross Struggles With Blood Shortage.
Canadian Red Cross Society officials said they were in the midst of their biggest recall ever with the withdrawal of thousands of units of plasma products needed by haemophiliacs, transplant patients and burn victims.
The Red Cross announced on Friday it was tracing plasma across Canada after being contacted by the daughter of a donor diagnosed with a virus called Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).
The blood recall could be yet another blow to the Canadian Red Cross, which has been criticised for being slow to protect the blood supply from the AIDS virus in the 1980s.

Shacknews - Interview: David Pratt of the Canadian Red Cross
The fact that the Red Cross is also used in videos which contain strong language and violence is also of concern to us in that they directly conflict with the basic humanitarian principles espoused by the Red Cross movement.
The crux of the problem is that the misuse of the Red Cross in video games is not only in contravention of the law, it also encourages others to believe that the emblem of the Red Cross is "public property" and can be freely used by any organization or indeed for commercial purposes.
One thing that was made repeatedly clear was that the Red Cross is in no way targeting the video game industry in particular; the society deals with infringement of the symbol on a frequent basis, and considers any unauthorized usage to be inappropriate.

"Canadian Red Cross Fined for Tainted Blood Scandal"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
TORONTO, May 30 (Reuters) - The Canadian Red Cross Society was fined C$5,000 ($4,000) on Monday for its part in distributing tainted blood products that infected more than 15,000 Canadians with HIV and hepatitis C in what is dubbed the worst public health tragedy in the country.
The settlement comes about 2 years after the police charged the Red Cross and others for failing to warn the public about the risks associated with unscreened blood, and for failing to test blood donated during the 1980s for hepatitis C or HIV.
The Canadian Red Cross has since transferred its blood operations to a government-funded agency, and officials at the agency when decisions were made to distribute the blood are no longer there.

 Red Cross Problems
Efforts by local Red Cross officials to present a new face for fund-raising and disaster support were stymied yesterday when national officials rejected a plan to earmark donations solely for victims of the wildfires charring many areas of San Diego County.
In addition, the Red Cross failed to screen out some people who were not supposed to give blood, the FDA said.
Victims infected with hepatitis C between 1986 and 1990 had been holding out hope that Red Cross negotiators, led by former Ontario premier Bob Rae, would be successful in moving Ottawa and the provinces to extend the package, removing the legal threat against the agency.

The truth about the Red Cross
THE AMERICAN Red Cross was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, who became famous during the Civil War for organizing the distribution of food and medical supplies to Union Army soldiers.
Congress incorporated the Red Cross to act under “government supervision.” Eight of the 50 members of its board of governors are appointed by the president of the United States, who also serves as honorary chairperson.
The most deadly example of this was the Red Cross’ criminally negligent response to the early stages of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.
