Satellite radio is also known as subscription radio or pay-radio because it isn't always delivered by satellite.
Satellite radio depends heavily on something called "line-of-sight." In other words, the satellite needs a clear view - or at least mostly clear view - of the receiving mechanism on Earth in order to reach it.
Both Sirius and XM use multiple satellites to increase the size of the blanketed area, but where the companies differ is in the orbit of those satellites.
