The Canadian Space Program, which is coordinated by the CSA, establishes the strategic importance of space in Canada's transition to a knowledge-based economy and to the government's social, scientific, sovereignty, industrial, security and foreign policy objectives.

In 1998, Dr. Thirsk was assigned by the Canadian Space Agency to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston to pursue mission specialist training.
He served as backup Flight Engineer to European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Roberto Vittori for the Soyuz 10S taxi mission to the ISS in April 2005.

To explore and work in space, human beings must take their environment with them because there is no atmospheric pressure and no oxygen to sustain life.
