The Royal Canadian Air Force was formed on 1 April 1924, and lost its distinct identity with the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces in 1968.
Canadians were involved from the start, but the first Canadian unit was 405 Squadron, which was operational in mid-1941 and was part of the elite Pathfinder group.
The first to serve was Air Marshal C.R. Canadian air defence in the post-1945 period relied heavily upon foreign-produced aircraft, a policy underlined by the cancellation of the AVRO ARROW in 1959.

Canadian Vickers Limited, [1978] 2 F.C. 675, was decided by the Federal Court, Trial Division shortly after the decisions in Quebec North Shore Paper Co. and McNamara Construction (Western) Ltd. The case involved a claim by a shipowner against a ship builder for breach of a ship building contract.
His comment that Canadian maritime law was not to be considered as frozen by the Admiralty Act of 1934 and that its ambit was limited only by the constitutional division of powers paved the way for a much greater expansion of the scope and content of Canadian maritime law.

The company had its origins in the aircraft division of Canadian Vickers Ltd, formed in 1923.
It was purchased by Canadians in 1927 and during WWII produced the Canso, a long-range flying boat used for maritime patrol.
The company was reorganized in 1944 by the Canadian government under the name Canadair, and sold to Electric Boat Co of the US in 1946.

A Curtiss H 16 was used briefly by the Canadian Air Force in Manitoba on forestry patrol and photography in 1923 but was a very unpopular aircraft as the open cockpit exposed the aircrew to the elements during their long patrols of 7 to 8 hours.
Built by Canadian Vickers, Montreal, it was used for photography, and for detection and suppression of forest fires.
A small single-seater biplane, the Vickers "Vigil", was specially designed for forestry patrol to replace the Avros on operations in the Rocky Mountain area where flying conditions were exceptionally severe due to the "bumpy" air, Designed as a land- plane, it was adaptable to skis or floats.

Although designed in Britain by the British Vicker's Aircraft Co, most of those used in Canada were constructed by the Canadian Vickers Company in 1923.
