The Canadian Wheat Board was established in 1935 as an AGRICULTURAL MARKETING BOARD charged with the orderly marketing of western grains.
The CWB is the sole marketing agency for prairie WHEAT and BARLEY destined for export or for human consumption in Canada.
The CWB was originally established as a voluntary marketing agency for prairie wheat, but the sale of wheat through the board became compulsory in 1943 and, in 1949, CWB powers were extended to include prairie oats and barley.

This means that Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) president Adrian Measner could be fired as soon as today by the Harper government because of his defence of the Canadian Wheat Board and Canadian farmers.
Canadian farmers have not reaped the benefits of free trade that were promised to them.
As a member of the Council of Canadians, I believe that the Government of Canada should maintain the Canadian Wheat Board and supply-management mechanisms that support family farms, protecting them from the prejudiced impact of international trade agreements.

If you're Canadian and you think ending the single desk authority of the Wheat Board is a bad idea, I'd like to ask you to call or write your MP, Chuck Strahl, Stephen Harper, or the leaders of the opposition parties.
Canadian wheat is a premium wheat product because it has more gluten than American wheat which means it rises better for bread making purposes.
I don't think that stasis around the Board is going to cut it, or should cut it - if one's in favour of the Board, seems to me that one should also be in favour of ensuring that the concerns that many farmers have with it are dealt with.

The prospect of ending the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) may seem too good to be true for U.S. wheat growers who have long complained about monopolies north of the border.
Defenders of the CWB say that, without the government monopoly, the price of grain would fluctuate day-to-day and farmers would have to negotiate their own price and often reap less of a profit.
Somewhere in the middle of this debate are farmers who believe that pooling wheat and negotiating a common price might be a good idea for some farmers, but that they shouldn't be forced to sell their grain only to the CWB.

This is precisely the case with the Canadian Wheat Board.
As a Canadian taxpayer it is in my best interest to see the Wheat Board maintained as it is. One of the main reasons is that we Canadians do not have to pay similar subsidies to our grain farmers that are paid out in the United States.
The latest issue with the Wheat Board has been the decision to hold a plebiscite by barley producers to determine if they wanted the Wheat Board to continue to handle their product.
