 The Value of Canadian Coins
The Canadian coins that were produced were the 1c, 5c, 10c and 20c coins and in the same year the amount of money that was agreed would be created for the Canadians was increased by 40%.
In 1860 the 20c coin was replaced with a 25 cent coin and in 1867 the government of Canada was awarded the right to govern it's own acts of coinage and subsequently one year later it became illegal for the private importing of foreign coins unless agreed to by the Canadian government.
Collectible coins have been produced that never made it to circulation but as with coins of this sort from any country in the world they were regularly produced in there thousands and often more so they aren't as collectible as the name would suggest.

 Canadian Grading
Today, with uncertified coins, a dozen or so grades are commonly seen, however, with Certified coins, at least fifteen grades are regularly used just to assess the circulated coins, while a further ten grades are used to designate the Mintstate coins, giving a total of more than twenty-five grades.
If you are buying uncertified coins, particularly sight-unseen, it is wise to determine the credentials of their grader, since inexperience or error on the part of the grader may lead to incorrect grading - and usually not in your favor.
These typical qualities vary not only from coin type to coin type, but from country to country, so a grader who is expert with the coins of one type or country may be far from accurate with the coins of another.

Modern Canadian coins - Calgary Coin Gallery
The history of numismatics in Canada began over 300 years ago when, in the 1670's, the French imported coins made for use in their colonies.
The coinage was not standardized until the issue of the Province of Canada cent, 5 cent, 10 cent and 20 cent coins of 1858, which set the pattern for the true Canadian coins issued after the Dominion of Canada was formed in 1867.
Even these were struck in Britain and it was not until the opening of the Royal Canadian Mint, in 1908, that the first true coins were struck in Canada.
