The system is modelled on the British honours system.
Honours from the Sovereign of the United Kingdom used to be regularly awarded in Canada, on the recommendation of the British government, including some distinctly Canadian titles, such as Baroness Macdonald of Earnscliffe (1891).
Most of these honours also grant the use of post-nominal letters and or supporters and other devices to be used on their coat of arms.
