The town of Canadice was formed under its present name as a distinct civil division of the county on the 15th of April, 1829, although it was not until the next year that the organization was made complete.
Honeoye Lake is the most historic of the three which touch the town, and by reference to an earlier chapter, the reader will learn the interesting events connected with its early history, and also that of the locality.
Canadice occupies a position in the southwestern part of the county, and is more remote and inaccessible from the county seat than any other of the towns.

The 40-year record of lake levels and outflow kept by the City shows that it is necessary to provide for a flood runoff equivalent to 5 feet depth on the lake, with a maximum inflow rate of 2400 cfs, with the reservoir initially full.
In either case a diversion conduit would be constructed from deep water in Canadice Lake, around the east or right-hand end of the dam (looking downstream), leading into the new drain channel or conduit.
With water in the present lake at elevation 393.5 or lower, there would be a slight difference of elevation of water in the two basins of the reservoir.

Water is pumped from Hemlock Lake and flows by gravity from Canadice Lake to the filtration plant on the northern shore of Hemlock Lake.
Hemlock Lake water is drawn through the intake crib and intake line to the pump station.
Canadice Lake water flows by gravity from Canadice Lake along a natural watercourse to a dam near State Highway 15-A. There it enters a conduit and may flow by gravity to either the screen chamber or to Hemlock Lake.

This area is the tiny westernmost Finger Lakes, and the hilly areas in between; namely, the relatively unknown Finger Lakes are just west of Canandaigua Lake are: Honeoye (pronounced: honey-oy and rhymes with "funny-boy"), Canadice, Hemlock and Conesus Lake (written up as a separate site).
Honeoye Lake is good for migrant waterfowl and lingering winter birds until the lake freezes.

Canadice was set off from Richmond in 1829 and the first town meeting was held April 6, 1830, at which time officers were elected.
The city of Rochester has acquired rights to both of these lakes, and not content with the use of the waters therefrom, is closing them round with city ownership of all contiguous territory and causing all cottages to be removed and beginning a return to primeval days by reforesting.
As the statutory boundary of the west side of the town along the lake shore was somewhat ambiguous, he construed it to suit his purpose and contended that the boundary line was at the water line.

Canadice Lake is nestled right smack dab in the middle of the Western Finger Lakes, and this 650 acre gem, along with its neighbor to the west, Hemlock Lake, are owned by the City of Rochester and managed as a source of water for the city.
There is no development along the lake’s shoreline, and the lake is as pristine now as it was 100 years ago.
The lake water, which we estimated to be in the mid to upper 40s, evidently thawed out any water which had frozen up the lower unit.

Dean Aldridge recalls that there were cottages at the south end of the lake, but most of the lake was surrounded by virgin forest." Several times, however, when the south road along Canadice Lake was closed, the boys and leaders had to ferry all their gear across the lake.
Once at the campsite, the boys erected 12 foot by 14 foot wall tents, all of which had 14 foot ridge poles (remember these had to be carried in on the boats).
The Hemlock Lake camp was suspended when the City of Rochester isolated that lake, too, for a reservoir.

Ninety-foot-deep Canadice Lake is the smallest of the Finger Lakes, but it has the highest elevation, at 1,096 feet, one of the reasons it is such a good water supply for the city.
