The Buckingham Canal is a salt water navigation canal, running parallel to the Coromandel Coast of South India for 420 km, from Krishna District in Andhra Pradesh to Villupuram District in Tamil Nadu.
The canal was taken over by the government of Madras Presidency in 1837 and further extended, ultimately reaching 315 km north of Chennai to Peddaganjam on the Krishna River in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh, and 103 km south of Chennai to Marakkanam in Tamil Nadu.
257 km of the canal are in Andhra Pradesh, and 163 km are in Tamil Nadu.

Most of the proposed right-of-way in on property owned by public agencies including: the cities of Franklin, Middletown and Hamilton, as well as the Ohio Department of Transportation, Metro Parks of Butler County and the Miami Conservancy District.

Although intended primarily for sanitary purposes, both the Sanitary and Ship Canal and Cal-Sag Canal were quite deep, with a minimum depth of 22 feet for the former and 20 feet for the latter, to provide for the large volumes of water they were intended to evacuate from the Chicago region.

 Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust Ltd
This tells that the canal was twenty-eight feet wide at top water and sixteen feet at the bottom and four and a half feet deep - the sloping sides being intended to prevent erosion.
Built between 1794 and 1797 as the Ogley Locks Section of the Wyrley and Essington Canal, the right to navigation was extinguished by Act of Parliament in 1954 and much of the canal was subsequently infilled.
