Topic: Canary Row

In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

Canary Row,  By Diane Tennant -The Virginian-Pilot
The proprietor of The Canary's Nest is unemotional.
Canaries were mated with compatible birds of different species, and new colors, sizes and feather types appeared.
Michelle Walton says her husband burns the candle at both ends but as a child, he had always wanted canaries and never got them, and then cancer cropped up when he was 27 and he beat it back, and it changed the way he looks at life and death and time.

 - How Sweet the Sound: Today's Canaries Rule the Roost
The canary as a companion has deep roots in the American psyche, perhaps due to its contribution as a noxious gas detector in the coal mines of the 1800’s and early 1900’s or its use as the model for the feisty yellow cartoon character, Tweety Bird.
The type canaries are bred to have certain physical characteristics, such as a mop of “hair” or frills; popular type canary breeds include the border canary, the crested, the fife, the Gloster, the lizard, and the Norwich.
Canaries were retired as coal mine gas detectors in the middle of the last century, but the memory of their use in that capacity hasn’t faded, and the tragedy of September 11th and the warnings of possible gas attacks renewed interest in the canary as a possible life-saver, especially in New York City.

Canary glass was the term originally used for flint glass that contained uranium oxide to produce a yellow-colored glass.
Canary flint glass WILL glow bright green under a UV fllight and for all intents and purposes, is collected by vaseline glass collectors as a "yellow-green glass that will glow green under a UV fllight, due to the presence of uranium oxide in the glass formula (definition most widely used by vaseline glass collectors).
In an email disussion with a long-time flint glass collector, this person told me that he had a damaged one in canary (one petal broken off) and the only one he had seen besides his was at the B and S Museum in Sandwich MA.

I do know about ocean rowing since long ago - my younger brother Ivan was a part of the support-team of Peter Bird during his attempts to row the Pacific from Vladivostok to San Francisco.
In 2001 I was helping my son - Theodore in his preparations for the row from Canary Islands to Barbados; it was then that I caught insuperable desire to set out to ocean - till now unknown to me five sixths of the globe.
In January 20th 2004 Pavel left La Gomera (Canary Islands) onboard his ocean rowboat Marion-Lviv to row 3000 miles across the Atlantic in the longest of rowing regattas - ORSARR 2004.

Looney Tunes - Stars Of The Show - Sylvester, Granny and Sylvester Jr.
Freleng tried several versions of the cat-chases-bird formula, starting with a twist-in Life With Feathers, it is a suicidal lovesick lovebird who is intent on forcing his way into Sylvester's mouth, while in another appearance (Peck Up Your Troubles) he unsuccessfully hunts a wily woodpecker.
But his career really picked up when Sylvester was cast with a tiny canary possessing savage instincts for self-preservation.
In Canary Row, the plot thickened with the casting of Granny, an old lady with a pinched voice and glasses, who acts as Tweety's owner and protector-as if Tweety needed any protection.

History: Although Cannery Row has been commercialized (yes, there is a Starbucks there) since the heyday of the sardine canning industry, the "Row," as it is known to locals, is still rich with history and memories of John Steinbeck, who wrote about it in his acclaimed novel "Cannery Row."
Kalisa Moore, a silver mop-topped older woman who has owned the business on the "Row" since 1958, is known as the Queen of Cannery Row.
For those who aren't history buffs, the "Row" offers plenty of other activities including art galleries such as the Ansel Adams Gallery, boutiques, restaurants and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

A row of Canary palms planted in Los Altos around the turn of the last century by the man responsible for transforming San Francisco's barren, windswept sand dunes into Golden Gate Park will remain a city legacy despite one couple's push to remove two of the trees from their front yard.
In a rare move, the Los Altos Historical Commission added the eight remaining trees lining private properties along Rinconada Court to the city's heritage list, protecting them from the chopping block.
Commission Vice Chairman Randall Hull said the city would be doing a disservice to the community if the commission did not protect all of the Canary palms remaining on the street.

I noticed some minor compression artefacts (the disc isn't full, so maybe higher bitrate would have solved those), but I'm willing to let that go.
