It is located at 35°0’S, 149°20’E Wine is grown and produced at or near and in a triangular area of about 60 km sides bordered by Canberra, Yass, and Bungendore, taking in the important sub-regions of Murrumbateman and Lake George.
The region is a tableland of the Great Dividing Range about 150 km inland from the Pacific Ocean.
The region is dry and requires drip irrigation.

Wines sold under the Kamberra label are 100 per cent Canberra District except for the fizz, which is a Tumbarumba-based blend under both labels.
It is in the interest of all Canberra District wineries that BRL Hardy should succeed, but it is also in Kamberra's interest that at least one other large wine group should establish itself in the region.
Canberra District is not yet recognised as a premium wine region, despite its potential, its early competition successes and the flag-waving name.

Outside Australia Canberra is hardly known at all as a wine producer.
The wine is soft, fragrant and rather haunting and the choice was perhaps made deliberately as a laudable reaction to Australia's stereotypically gigantic, tannic, monster Shirazes.
Nor has a major investment by one of the country's biggest wine producers BRL Hardy (who value Canberra fruit highly enough to have used some of it in its flagship Eileen Hardy Chardonnay) done any harm to the number of vine-growers and growing reputation of this unusually cool Australian wine region.

Raised in Canberra, Alex McKay has a strong association with the Canberra wine industry, having worked in the region’s vineyards and wineries since completing secondary school in 1989.
He is a graduate of the University of Adelaide (Bachelor of Applied Science in Oenology) and has travelled widely as a winemaker, completing vintages in the Hunter Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Padthaway, California’s Napa Valley and the Barolo region of Northern Italy.
He joined BRL Hardy in 2000 as a winemaker at Stonehaven Winery in Padthaway, and now oversees the new 1500-tonne Kamberra Winery, where, as the Winemaker and Manager, he is responsible for the Kamberra and Meeting Place ranges of cool climate wines.
