Television Production: Television Audio - Using Off-Camera Microphones
When multiple mics are used on a set there are four things you can do to reduce or eliminate the resulting phase cancellation:
carefully check and vary distances between the sound sources and multiple mics to reduce or eliminate any cancellation effect (A speaker's mic should be placed at one-third or less the distance of the next nearest mic.)
Because the sounds arrive at the mic at slightly different times, they end up being out of phase and to various degrees cancel each other out.

 Tommy Hunter Show, The
Hunter's insistence that the set in each city reflect the locale of the taping illustrated his constant striving to reinsert a local feel into the globalizing pull of television.
The behind-the-scenes conflict between CBC television workers and Tommy Hunter, a country musician, derived from their emergence from two separate cultural formations: on the one hand, the "world" of television production, with its own sensibilities and its own priorities; and on the other hand, the "world" of country music, with its internal organization and logic.
It was this purist approach that would ultimately sound the show's death knell, however, and a lack of younger viewers and slipping audience ratings led to its cancellation in 1992.

MAGAZINE CRAFT DGA at the Television Critics Association VOL 28-6: February 2004
Some critics bemoaned that television is not what it once was, finding support in ratings figures indicating that even the top shows today are drawing numbers that would have guaranteed cancellation a decade ago.
Director Alan Arkush (Crossing Jordan, Ally McBeal) welcomed directors and critics to the DGA's Episodic Television Directors reception, held at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood, during the recent Television Critics Association's (TCA) winter press tour.
However, while some wish that American television could be done the way it is in the U.K. and elsewhere, others commented that audiences, critics and those working in the industry in those countries are looking to these shores and wishing they had the variety and quality to be found on American television.

 Silliphant, Stirling
Longstreet's cancellation after one season effectively ended Silliphant's involvement in the continuing series form--but not his television career.
Meanwhile, Silliphant's "poetry" was living (broadcast) proof of television's capacity for brilliant writing and provocative drama, and thirty years later, the writing machine was still writing.
Although he had early success in the 1950s with a spate of feature films, and went on to even greater big-screen achievements in the late 1960s and 1970s, Silliphant maintained a constant presence in television throughout his writing career, and in the 1980s focused most of his attention on television movies, historical miniseries, and novels.

As dramatic a gesture as the "Crossfire" cancellation seems, it is also, given CNN's prime-time performance, a bit like rearranging deck chairs on the proverbial sinking ship.
The departure last week of the puckish bow-tie enthusiast and "Crossfire" co-host Tucker Carlson from CNN was a surprise to almost no one who keeps abreast of cable news comings and goings.
After all, CNN has for a quarter of a century defined itself as a hard-news network, and "Crossfire's" existence on the schedule for 23 of those years had never been viewed as anathema to the network's identity.

Firefly was a scifi show in danger of cancellation before the first episode ever aired.
For those of you readers who may be puzzled as to why a network would spend millions and millions of dollars to produce a television show and then take it out to the backlot and shoot it between the eyes, here's a little primer about how the inner financial world of broadcast television works.
Kristen and I found ourselves essentially erased from Firefly's fandom story, and a goodly portion of the fans who would sell their mothers into a sex slave ring to score tickets to an early screening of the flick have never heard of either of us.

For one year (and six episodes following, before its untimely cancellation) it was the best drama on television, and now, thankfully, NBC has finally done the shows rabid, wounded fans right by presenting the brilliant first 16 episodes on a five-disk DVD package, complete with six commentary tracks and two documentaries.
In the pilot, for example, a young girl is murdered during a botched drive-by shooting, and one of the boys inadvertently involved, an innocent black teenager from a good family, accidentally dies during the investigation.
“Boomtown”, which ran for 16 weeks on Sundays at 10 on NBC, before fatally moving to Friday, created a lot of buzz when it was initially screened for critics at an annual TV journalism convention.
