Candidates Tournament - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Candidates Tournament was a triannual chess tournament organized by the world chess federation FIDE as the final contest to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship.
Most of these qualified from Interzonal tournaments, though the top one or two from the previous Candidates tournament gained direct entry without having to play the Interzonal.
Before 1965, the tournament was organized in a round-robin format.

This will allow the billfish tournament community to have a pool of trained observers that may be utilized to conduct release or tag and release billfish tournaments on as fair a basis as possible and to realize the additional benefits which trained observers can provide.
Although the number of billfish killed in tournaments has been on a decline due to the implementation of minimum size limits and various release formats, it should be possible to further reduce billfish landings by increasing the popularity of release format tournaments.
Many tournaments want to support the concept of release tournaments but have faced strong opposition from participants who are not comfortable with the current status of observers used in some tournaments.

The old FIDE candidates match system is probably too expensive, and elimination mini-matches, are unacceptable, IMHO, and I think a lot of fans are in agreement with me. So this leads us to the obvious idea of having swiss style or round robin play for candidates matches down to, perhaps, a final 4, or 2.
Simply put, the "candidate system" whatever it is should simply create an ordering of the players in some schedule such that if some player refuses to play (or can't because they are dead or something) then the system automatically adjusts with the remaining players.
A "candidate" tournament between the best 8 should determine the candidate in a given year, and a title match should determine the champion a year later.

The central authorities prevented Korchnoi from playing any international tournaments, and even when invited by Paul Keres and Iivo Nei to participate in an International Tournament in Estonia, Korchnoi was not allowed to play, and both Keres and Nei were reprimanded.

If it were necessary to include eight candidates, plus the champion (as is the case in Dortmund), the 30 days would be better spent in three rounds of 4-game knockout matches, followed by an 18-game match against the defending champion (60% effectiveness).
The Einstein Group championships were treated as two simultaneous qualifier tournaments (each of which were 4-player double-round-robin tournaments that qualified two players), and then there were three rounds of knockout matches, with the champion entering the cycle in the third and final round of knockouts.
It says that knockout tournaments work better, because the strongest players are in control of their own destiny, and nobody can finish ahead of you unless you are actually knocked out by someone.
