Sardonic in outlook, it follows the naïve protagonist Candide from his first exposure to the precept that "all is for the best in this, the best of all possible worlds," and on through a series of adventures that dramatically disprove that precept even as the protagonist clings to it.

All of the texts I looked at had their strengths and all of them did honour in their different ways to the unalterably wonderful music, but it seemed to me that none of them sufficiently reflected or trusted Voltaire’s original story, which was, after all, Bernstein’s first inspiration.
Candide himself required a fuller relationship with Cacambo, his faithful servant, and a much more significant relationship with Martin, the friend who becomes the essential philosophical counterweight to Pangloss.
From the very beginning of the show, when he seems to imagine the music of the Overture all the way through to the final chords of ‘Make Our Garden Grow’ Voltaire must be in charge.

First seen at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1973, moving to Broadway the next year, it was frantic, colorful and irreverent, as hip theatrical experiences were largely meant to be in those days.
The worst of all this is that it neglects to acknowledge the profound wit of Bernstein's music.

When you look at the timeline of musical theater, it was the lyricist, Sondheim, who would go on to rewrite the rules of the genre.
His predecessors were artists whose music had grown out of the Jewish immigration and assimilation experience of the first half of the 20th century.
To wonder what would have happened to the musical if it had followed in Bernstein's more upbeat tracks is not idle speculation, because in a sense, for reasons both cultural and economic, the genre has come back toward him.

Bernstein was choosing instead to highlight contemporary American music, and his “Omnibus” lecture gave early notice that he would be an articulate spokesman for musical conservatism, while all around him the tide was flowing toward serialism.
The music of the satirical number “Gee, Officer Krupke” was annexed form the Venice scene in Candide, where its punch line (to Latouche’s lyrics) had been, “Where does it get you in the end?” The traffic flowed both ways.
