  Candlemass February 2nd
The celebration of Candlemass originated in the late fifth century as a tribute to the light of God's glory that was manifested in Christ Jesus.
The timing for Candlemass is also in accordance with the Mosaic Law, which required that a woman should purify herself for forty days after giving birth, and, at the end of her purification, should present herself to the priest at the temple and offer a sacrifice (Leviticus 12:6-7).
The Roman Catholic Churches seem to devote greater focus to this aspect of Candlemass, as evidenced by their ritual of the Purification of Saint Mary the Virgin, while the Anglican Churches celebrate the Wives' Feast, which is a time when women gather with feasting and socializing.

Candlemass is widely acknowledged as one of the founders of the modern doom metal movement.
Founded by Leif Edling after the demise of his previous band Nemesis, the group immediately made its mark with their debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, a true landmark in the doom field (and a BNR favorite), though it was the arrival of charismatic vocalist Messiah Marcolin that the band's trademark sound began to develop.
The comeback album, simply titled Candlemass, was finally released in 2005, and it was a success, the band sounding rejuvenated and fresh while retaining the classic sound of their past.

The first Candlemass album was Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, released in 1986 and now considered a milestone in the Doom metal scene.

 Utter Trash--Candlemass
Candlemass took the metal scene by storm in 1986 with the release of ‘Epicus Doomicus Metallicus’ and continued successfully until 1993, leaving behind 6 albums of epic doom.
The re-releases were overseen by Candlemass bassist Leif Eidling, who really went the extra mile by including bonus discs with each album as well as making sure the CD booklets were packed with photos and all the lyrics.
Messiah and Candlemass are too focused on playing the kind of heavy metal that made them legends in some circles and helped inspire many of today’s doom metal bands.

Not that Candlemass is one of my favorite bands or anything — it's just that I recognize that Candlemass have a unique sound and any chance for the band to continue that sound was welcome news.
However, it was nice to see some of my favorite Candlemass songs such as "Dark Are The Veils Of Death" and "Demon's Gate" performed by the band at least once as their Stateside treks were rare to begin with and certainly unlikely even if a successful reunion had lasted.

Candlemass anno 2005 consists of the crazy munk Messiah Marcolin (vocals), Mats Björkman (guitars), Lars Johansson (guitars), primus motor Leif Edling (bass) and Jan Lindh (drums) - in other words the classic line-up who recorded such genre defining landmarks as "Nightfall" (1987) and "Ancient Dreams" (1988).
However, the 90s version of Candlemass is not completely gone despite the arrival of the Messiah.
In fact, "Candlemass" is probably the heaviest sounding album the band has released to this day which should please at least some fans.

Candlemass are widely accepted as one of, if not the, first of their kind to play modern doom metal.
Candlemass' brand of doom revolves around the use of heavy guitars, (which as we all know is very uncommon in metal) operatic vocals, and usually slow paced music.
Finally in 1987, Candlemass were able to secure the musicians they needed to continue, and this lineup is considered to be the most successful.

Candlemass was arguably the most compelling early doom metal band in the 1980s.
A defining moment for Candlemass, Nightfall is a must-have for anybody who enjoys oppressive-yet-melodic metal or for fans of stupendous vocals in general (which the band couldn't handle anymore after a while, as they later fired Marcolin in a commercially and artistically blighted attempt at crossing over into more mainstream metal).
Candlemass was one of the earlier Swedish doom bands, taking a healthy dose of Black Sabbath and adding a vocalist trained in opera.

 February 2nd
The popular name Candlemass is derived from the ceremony which the Church of Rome dictates to be observed on this day; namely, a blessing of candles by the clergy, and a distribution of them amongst the people, by whom they are afterwards carried lighted in solemn procession.
The latter part of the day was usually devoted to what was called the Candlemass bleeze, or blaze, namely, the conflagration of any piece of furze which might exist in their neighbourhood, or, were that wanting, of an artificial bonfire.
Considering the importance attached to Candlemass day for so many ages, it is scarcely surprising that there is a universal superstition throughout Christendom, that good weather on this day indicates a long continuance of winter and a bad crop, and that its being foul is, on the contrary, a good omen.

Every Candlemass, observed on February 2nd when we celebrate the presentation of Christ in the Temple together with the Purification of his blessed Mother, I read a particular sermon written many years ago by one of the Caroline Divines, Mark Frank, who died shortly after the restoration of the Church in England in 1662.

I saw Candlemass for the first time in my life at Sweden Rock in 2002 and felt that it was great to finally see a band that I had liked for so many years back together again, but now that I listen to the new album the feeling I get is even greater.
The new album which is simply titled Candlemass comes with a better balance than ever, and the quality of the songs is very 'even' throughout the whole album and the quality is very high.
Despite the doomy mood it feels refreshing to listen to them and that is perhaps a sign of that this is the album that is the most easy to listen to done by this line-up, it takes less time to let this album sink in compared to how long it took with their earlier works.

Candlemass: self-titled - PopMatters Music Review
Sweden's Candlemass might not have achieved the kind of commercial success in North America that many had hoped they would, but their influence on contemporary metal is undeniable.
Candlemass, as any metal band would do, kept on going, and the revolving door of band members went into overdrive, until the only remaining original member would be founding guitarist Leif Edling.
In a world where the biggest music stars are either barely old enough to vote, or acting far too young for their age, metal is all about attitude and musical proficiency, and as the decades have passed, many artists continue to sound as strong as they did 20 years ago.

What many younger metal fans don't know is that this was also the year that a whole new subgenre of metal was brought to life through this close to legendary album.
Candlemass was formed in 1985 after the demise of his old band Nemesis and as you can see it didn't take long before they ended up with a record deal.

Therefore, CANDLEMASS not only had to compete with their absolutely amazing 80’s releases, they also had to avoid a rehash and a deliberate attempt to recreate an album already released.
“Candlemass”, the album, comprises of ten songs (that is including the bonus track; the initial intro track “Enemy” that was included in the pre-listening version has now been incorporated into “Black Dwarf”) of pure gold, ten compositions of the kind that only Leif Edling is capable of.
With this album CANDLEMASS have reclaimed the throne that always belonged to them, and have delivered a work in the same league with their 80’s albums, and this is a titanic accomplishment.
