  Candlewicking - Embroidery
Candlewick is readily available from craft stores, however a lot of embroiderers prefer to use soft Cotton-a-broider, or the finer ply´s of knitting/crochet cottons.
Although traditionally, Candlewicking was done white on white, today´s embroiderers use many different colours of thread to give their work a distinctive look - however you do find that the main colours are still white on white, with other colours only used as accent colours, or as painted designs that are not stitched.
Candlewicking is best worked in a hoop or frame, which helps you to keep the embroidery taught.

 Candlewick embroidery
Candlewicking is a traditional white on white embroidery, done on white linen or cotton fabric with heavy cotton threads used for making candle wicks.
Wicking for candles was used instead of the couched cords, hence the name candlewicking, and undoubtedly lesser quality cotton and linen fabrics were used.
Sometimes the knot was cut; more often in the earlier work it was left uncut, and these examples retain a certain distinction in their fine, tight wicking, graceful patterning and a generally refined, neat appearance." This sounds like the beginnings of turkey work to me.

Interestingly enough, candlewicking also became popular in Australia as English settlers moved to Australia and met with the same dearth of fine materials on which to embroider.
Jan Potter, in her book Candlewicking, states that candlewicking was born in the Wild West as women traveled west in wagon trains to settle the prairies and high plains and longed for some comfort and adornment in the harsh, lonely places where they found themselves.
Embroidered candlewicking is what we are most accustomed to seeing today where there is a great use of French and Colonial knots.

 Candlewicking Kit and Embroidery Kits
Candlewicking embroidery dates to colonial times in the United States.
Why is it called "candlewicking?" The stitcher, looking for a heavy thread, simply sewed a running stitch using the unwaxed thread used for candle wicks to get the characteristic raised or embossed look.
Embroidery kits may include a bit of candlewicking, and some candlewicking kits will include a bit of embroidery, especially satin stitch.

 CREWEL, CANDLEWICKING & EMBROIDERY
The main difference between Crewel, Candlewicking, and Embroidery is the type of thread or yarn used, and the repetition and variation of certain stitches.
The design would be stitched primarily in french knot, or a variation thereof, giving texture and interest to what was traditionally monochromatic (natural toned muslin stitched with natural toned candle-wick or yarn) to the piece (anything from tablecloths to bedspreads).
Now candlewick is done to accent floss embroidery designs done in color, as well as in the monochromatic wholecloth bedspreads, tablecloths, etc. Ccandlewick yarn made specifically for that purpose comes in several sizes and plys and is softer and easier to work with than the traditional cotton wicking.
