Parishes: Nutley | British History Online
The main road from the Candovers climbing this high country towards Farleigh cuts through the centre of Nutley parish, entering it from the south at Axford, which, with its two fine old thatched farm-houses of the farms of Upper and Lower Axford, is partly in Nutley and partly in Preston Candover.
The soil of the whole parish is chalk and clay with a subsoil of chalk, and crops of wheat, turnips, oats, and barley are produced on the 556½ acres of arable land which lies for the most part south and east of the village.
The vicarage of Nutley is annexed to Preston Candover.

Travelling north from Alresford on the B3046, Brown Candover is the first of the three and quietly impressive, with a delightful view uphill to the picturesque church of St Peter's.
The middle settlement, Chilton Candover, is intriguing home to a couple of surprises: a buried church and what is believed to be, at nearly half a mile long, the longest avenue of yews in England.
Preston Candover, set among towering beech and conker trees, is the largest of the three and a slightly unlikely mix of dairy herds and tennis club, allotments and skate ramp.

Today it has a population of around 34,000, which is just about double what it was in the early 1960s when the Greater London Council offered to rebuild the centre of the town and relocate some of its citizens to this somewhat isolated setting in the wide-open spaces of the North Hampshire downs.
The name of the place comes from a conjunction of the ancient Celtic words ‘An’ or spring — as found in other places nearby such as Little Ann, Abbotts Ann, Anna and Anton — and ‘dever’ which means a place for crossing the water — and is found in Micheldever and the Candovers.
How instead, can we balance the perception that the area has no history with what we see today.
