 History of Florida
Natives of Greece, Italy, and Minorca were induced to settle there, at a place called New Smyrna, about 60 miles south of St. Augustine, to the number of 1,500, where they engaged in the cultivation of indigo and the sugar-cane; but, becoming dissatisfied with their employers, they removed to St. Augustine.
About 460 men from South Carolina were sent to Savannah by water, with two field-pieces; and on the 18th, Lee, after reviewing the collected troops, sent the Virginians and a portion of the South Carolinians to Sunbury.
The convention was addressed by L. Spratt, of South Carolina, an eminent advocate for reopening the African slave-trade.

Savannah is about a 45-minute drive, and Charleston is 65 miles away, an easy hour and a half drive.
It was the arrival of the Union Navy into Port Royal Sound that caused the citizens of Beaufort to flee the city in 1861, after which it became a Union medical center.
Among the areas covered in the term “South of Broad” are Hilton Head, Bluffton, Daufuskie, Callawassie, Spring, Lemon, Okatie and Sun City, which straddle Beaufort and Jasper counties.

They have collected cane mills for more than a decade and have two especially well-preserved ones (a Columbus No. 18 and, my favorite, a Kentucky No. 0 [which has a patent date of 1877]); I was very happy to be able to buy a Goldens' No. 2 (Old Style) mill from them.
His foundry made cane mills (e.g., Slide 24, above) and kettles, the latter not being uncommon in the areas I visit.
Apparently, a number of power mills in south Georgia are basically Goldens' mills, but were made by, or used replacement parts from the Thompson or other foundries as indicated by differences in details such as lubrication or thickness of parts.

Haskell served in the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, and in April 1864 was commissioned a Lieutenant in the 7th South Carolina Cavalry.
The 2nd South Carolina included soldiers such as Captain John B. Kennedy, who was wounded six times and struck by 15 spent balls, rising to the rank of brigadier general in the Confederate Army by the end of the war.
The 4th South Carolina Cavalry served in the Charleston area until 1864 when the command was transferred to the Virginia theater.
