Abstract 5797 from Intl. Bot. Congress 1999   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Canellaceae are a family traditionally assigned to Magnoliales, of disjunct distribution: Africa and tropical America.
In order to clarify their palynological features, all six genera were examined, using SEM and critical point, focusing on infratectal structure and aperture sculpture.
Thus highly divergent patterns but also shared features are evidenced within Canellaceae, providing morphological data for its use in large cladistic analyses of basal angiosperms.

Nodes are unilacunar with a two-trace condition at subnodal levels.
Stamens are all separate and anthers are bilocular in some members of each family.
Thus it is probable that the resemblances between the xylem of Canellaceae and Gomortegaceae have resulted from parallel evolution; the similarities of the xylem in the latter family with the xylem of Chloranthaceae, Monimiaceae and Lauraceae are in all likelihood based on true, and relatively close, relationships.

Botanists have from time to time suggested that Gomortegaceae are most closely related to Canellaceae, Chloranthaceae, Monimiaceae or Lauraceae.
Even though xylary relations are seen among these five taxa, other morphological considerations in Canellaceae make it unlikely that a close relationship exists between this family and Gomortegaceae.
Canellaceous flowers possess a well-developed staminal tube, a plan very likely based on pentamery, anthers with longitudial dehiscence and trilacunar nodes.
