Canes Venatici is surrounded by Ursa Major to the north, Boötes to the east and Coma Berenices to the south (between RA=12h 10m and RA=14h 10m, DECL=+53 deg and DECL=+28 deg).
The meteor shower Canes Venaticids is active during January 13th and January 30th (maximum around January 24/25th).
Canes Venatici is thought to represent the two dogs of the herdman Boötes.

The story behind the name: Hevelius was an observational astronomer who cataloged stars, and created some new constellations in parts of the sky where none had been marked out by earlier civilizations.
The constellation of Canes Venatici, consisting mainly of two bright stars, is supposed to represent the two hunting dogs of Boötes held on a leash.

It is the equivalent of the Latin word "Antecanis" or "Before the Dog," an allusion to the fact that Procyon rises about 20 minutes before Sirius (at midnorthern latitudes), and thus heralds the appearance of the great Dog Star.
Located about a third of the way from the end of the Big Dipper's handle and below it, these dogs were placed in the sky to assist Boö tes, the Bear Driver in his daily task of pursuing the Big Bear (Ursa Major) around the pole of the heavens.
There are also three faint galaxies in this region of the sky, located between Canes Venatici and the Big Dipper's handle.

Canes Venatici (the Hunting Dogs) is a small constellation in a dark galaxy-infested part of the sky.
Canes Venatici is situated beneath Coma Berenices (another faint constellation), to the west of the large Bootes and just "above" some stars of Ursa Major.
