  ADW: Canidae: Information
Canids are widely distributed, occurring on all continents except Antarctica.
Canids are probably an early offshoot of the caniform lineage (which includes mustelids, procyonids, ursids, phocids, otariids, and odobenids).
The legs and feet of canids are moderately elongated, and their stance is digitigrade.

 IUCN/SSC Canid Specialist Group
The Canid Specialist Group (CSG) is the world's chief body of scientific and practical expertise on the status and conservation of all canid species.
Other are rare and even declining, while many wild canids are too common for their own good, and thus are involved in major wildlife management issues (such as disease transmission, predation on livestock, sport hunting, fur trade).
All CSG members are actively involved in canid conservation and research, and serve as honorary advisers, bring with them the experience and the knowledge gained in their professional careers.

Wolf Song of Alaska: Infestation of Lice Among Wild Canids in Alaska
A specific policy regarding louse infestations among wild Alaskan canids should be considered in light of the recently discovered infestation of lice on wolves and coyotes in the Mat-Su Valley.
In response to the initial infestation of wolves and coyotes on the Kenai Peninsula during the winter of 1981-82, the department proposed to identify and eliminate all infested packs there, which was the course of action recommended by several ectoparasitologists.
However, the potential for dogs to transmit lice to wild canids around communities away from the road system may be minimal because wolf harvest there tends to be high.

Captive Breeding and Reintroduction of Canids
Of course, not all captive breeding of canids is recorded in the IZY.
Canid litters bred in captivity, 1962 to 1984.
That the number of canid litters bred in captivity annually has remained more or less constant over the last 20 years is probably nothing more than an indication that the space, time, and money for captive breeding have remained limited.

The Biology and Conservation of Wild Canids
Beginning with a complete account of all 36 canid species, there follow six review chapters that emphasise topics most relevant to canid conservation science, including evolution and systematics, behavioural ecology, population genetics, diseases, conflict/control of troublesome species, and conservation tools.
These chapters portray the unique attributes of wild canids, their fascinating (and conflictive) relationship with man, and suggestions for future research and conservation measures for the Canidae.
While most canid species are widespread and thrive in human dominated landscapes, several are in severe jeopardy; habitat loss, illegal hunting, persecution by farmers and disease all imperil dwindling populations.
