All the fecund Roussillon plain looks allegorically toward Canigou, and pleasant small spa towns bask in its shade, but the mountain is guarded by ramparts and outposts that shield it from mundane reality.
I prefer, anyway, one of the modest small shrines of the Canigou country that are far from any highway, and seem to have sprouted spontaneously out of the mountain rock.

Celles-ci contournent par l'est (droite) le second ressault, prendre au millieu de la dalle par des vires caillouteuses, deux écailles superposés et une fissure évidente et facile pour rejoindre un joli col. Le traverser et monter en traversée versant ouest jusqu'à rejoindre le pré qui mène au pic sec.

In the very center of the first picture I kept for this day, you may distinguish my tent ; clearly this is a lovely prairie to spend a night.
I remember having suffered somehow from heat in the little shadowed valley to Py -but there is a nice café there.
I stop at the first gîte d'étape of the village -a rather stale old place- and discover another one, where I can get a vigorous rabbit-and-pasta meal under the direction of a hearty and lively gîte-keeper.

PRADES is easily accessible by train and bus on the Perpignan-Villefranche-La Tour-de-Carol route, and the obvious starting point for all excursions in the Canigou region.
It's an attractive place, although there are no great sights beyond the church of St-Pierre in the town centre, and it enjoys a standing way out of proportion to its size or economic power.
The bare stone crypt and church - the altar slab was rediscovered doing duty as a balcony on a house in the village of Vinça - are impressive enough, but the glory of the place is the cloister.
