Digimorph - Canis familiaris (domestic dog - Chihuahua)
The origin of the domestic dog, Canis familiaris, has been a source of confusion and controversy for many years.
Currently, the hypothesis favored by the majority of researchers is the origination of dogs from the gray wolf, Canis lupus, but even that position has been challenged in the past.
Canis familiaris is actually the most morphologically variable mammal known to science.

The predicted amino acid sequence of the monkey precursor is 96% identical to that of the human protein; differences include one replacement in the signal peptide and three in the islet amyloid polypeptide domain.
The presence of amyloid deposits in some dog pancreatic endocrine tumours suggests that the dog protein can be amyloidogenic, perhaps due to elevated expression of islet amyloid polypeptide by the tumours relative to normal islets.
The sequence of the dog precursor is most closely related to that of the cat protein (85% identity); the sequences of dog and cat islet amyloid polypeptide differ only at two positions and are identical in the region of amino acids 20-29, the region thought to be primarily responsible for amyloidogenesis.

Until recently zoologists classified dogs and wolves as separate species;  now these scientists have managed a taxonomic merger and proclaimed the two animals to be the same species.
The scientific name of the wolf is Canis lupis and the dog used to be Canis familiaris;  they are now both  known as Canis lupus.
The official change from Canis familiaris to Canis lupis familiaris was formalized in 1993 by the publication of Mammal Species of the World:  a Taxonomic and Geographical reference, edited by D.E.Wilson and D.E.A Reeder.

I have seen figures of 2500 genetic diseases in man and there are likely to be as many in Canis familiaris, taken as a whole.
Yet, they have been considered different species (within the genus Canis) because they normally live in different places, behave differently, and can usually be told apart.
The tricky bit is restricting variability for those genes that make a breed distinctive without sacrificing the variability/diversity that is necessary for good health and long-term survival of the breed.

The jigsaw of how these remarkable differences emerged has now been pieced together by Ms Lynch, from the Canine Studies Institute in Aurora, Ohio, and Jenny Madeoy, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, in Washington State.

For years, the domestic dog was classified by scientists as a distinct species, Canis familiaris.
However, recent DNA analysis that shows that dogs evolved from wolves, Canis lupus, has led scientists to reclassify the domestic dog as Canis lupus familiaris, a subspecies of the wolf rather than a separate species.
It is difficult to generalize about the physical appearance of the domestic dog because extensive manipulation by humans has resulted in much variation in size, coat type and color, and overall morphology.

Actually, most taxonomists now classify all dogs, from Chihuahuas to the biggest Mastiffs, as a subspecie(a very MUTATED subspecie)of Grey Wolf.
The current classification accepted by most taxonomists for the domesticated dog, including feral varieties like the Dingo, is Canis lupus familiaris.
