  Canis latrans
Canis latrans is considered a medium-sized mammal with erect pointed ears, slender muzzle and a bushy tail (Messier and Barrette 1982; Bowen 1980; Bekoff 1995).
Canis latrans will spend more time resting than hunting when carrion is available, although it would not be their first choice of meat; they would much rather have fresh meat (Wells and Bekoff 1982).
Canis latrans social structure is affected by the amount of food available (Bowen 1980; Reichel 1991) and distinguishes whether the coyote has a home-range or a territorial range.

Red Wolves: Are they a wolf/coyote hybrid?
The biological species concept defines a species as a population or a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed with one another in nature to produce fertile offspring, but who cannot interbreed with members of other species to produce viable, fertile offspring.
By using this definition only, Canis rufus is not a true species, as it can hybridize with both Canis latrans (the coyote) and Canis lupus (the gray wolf).
Canis lupus and Canis latrans are found on the same continent and are recognized as being two separate species even though they interbreed and produce fertile offspring.

The coyote (Canis latrans) enjoys the most extensive natural range of any terrestrial mammal.
Originally, the coyote’s range was limited by the presence of the larger and more powerful gray wolf in the east and north, and the red wolf (Canis rufus) in the south.
The decline and eventual extirpation of gray and red wolf populations after the coming of European settlers allowed the adaptable coyotes to significantly expand their range and occupy more diverse habitats during the 20th century.
