This village or castle was the seat of At-weet-se-ra, the "Delaware King," who in 1765, the year after the destruction of the place by Montour and Brant, made a treaty with Sir William Johnson, at Johnson Hall, on the Mohawk.
The village of Canisteo was incorporated under the general law in 1873.
Canisteo is three hundred and thirty miles from New York, thirty-seven from Corning, ninety-three from Buffalo, and five miles from Hornellsville, on the main Erie Railway.

The Canisteo River is a tributary of the Tioga River, approximately 55 mi (90 km) long, in western New York in the United States.
As on other rivers in the Susquehanna basin, transportation on the Canisteo before the middle 19th century was often accomplished by arks up to 75 ft (23 m) long.
The headwaters of the Canisteo were considered to be the farthest navigable headwaters of ark navigation in the Susquehanna watershed.

Again looking at the maps, one notices, that many of our principal cities, villages, and hamlets are located where these same Indians originally had their settlements, and for the same reasons.
Their settlements were usually at the junction of two streams or valleys- a spot that provided a level area for growing corn and fruit, and plenty of water and driftwood for fuel.
Lesser known was the Canisteo Path, a secondary trail which started at Painted Post and followed the Canisteo River valley its entire length and ended at Caneadea on the Genesee where it joined the Allegheny Trail to the southwest and the Niagara Trail to west.
