Of course, the Row was a major sardine canning area in the early 1900s, and by the end of the 1950s, the sardines had vanished from the waters of the Bay, and most of the canneries had to close down.
It is a fun place to visit and one can see some of the old past as you view one or two of the old canneries.

In "surfing" the various sites dealing with Steinbeck in general and these two novels in particular, I have found the pictures to be less than satisfying.
I was fortunate enough to visit Cannery Row late in the 1960s and I have dug through my slides to find the pictures I have included in this site.

Construction of the Cannery Row Hotel is due to begin this week in Monterey, Calif. Developer Pacific Hotel Management L.L.C. will spend $70 to $80 million to complete the 208-room property, which will occupy a 2.7-acre parcel on the celebrated street (pictured), made famous by John Steinbeck's novel.
The Cannery Row Hotel will be located near the Monterey Bay Aquarium at 750 Cannery Row and, in addition to its upscale guestrooms, will feature 18,500 square feet of retail space and 10,200 square feet of meeting space.
Due to legislation designed to preserve the Monterey Bay waterfront and maintain a diversity of offerings, the Cannery Row Hotel may very well be the last lodging property to be developed on the street.

Not to worry, everything is in the hands of Cannery Row's resident guardian angels, Mack and the boys, a band of drunken derelicts whose hearts are in the right place, even though their brains are not.
This 1982 effort at adapting John Steinbeck's Sweet Thursday and Cannery Row is barely watchable, salvaged only by the thoughtful performances of Nick Nolte as a marine biologist and Debra Winger as a drifter.
His character is based on a real life person, a marine scientist named Ed Ricketts who lived and worked along Cannery Row (which was certainly not the tourist attraction in the 1930s-40s that it is today).
