In 1837, a portion of Northeastern Cannon Co. was used in the forming of the new Dekalb Co., and in 1838 a portion of Wilson County containing the area around Auburntown was added to Cannon.
The County is bounded on the west by Rutherford County, the north by Wilson and DeKalb Counties, on the east by Warren County, and on the south by Coffee County.
Then, in 1836, it was chosen as the County Seat for the new county and was renamed Woodbury, in honor of Levi Woodbury, the Secretary of the Treasury under President Andrew Jackson.

Martha "Patty" Cannon, who apparently settled in the United States from Canada in 1802, was the leader of a gang in the early 1800s that kidnapped slaves and free fls and transported and sold them to plantation owners located further south.
Cannon was the wife of local farmer Jesse Cannon and lived near the town of Reliance, Maryland, U.S., then called Johnson's Corners, on the border at the convergence of Caroline County and Dorchester County, Maryland, and Sussex County, Delaware.
Victim accounts as printed in the abolitionist journal the African Observer state that captives were chained and hidden in the basement, the attic, and secret rooms in the house.

Cannon County was established on January 31, 1836, when the state legislature took portions of Rutherford, Smith, and Warren Counties to create the new county of Cannon, named in honor of Whig Governor Newton Cannon.
Woodbury also is the county's educational center, home to the Laurens Academy and the Baptist Female College during the antebellum era, Woodbury College during the Victorian era, and the public Cannon County High School, which was established in 1920.
Cannon established the Woodbury newspaper, practiced law, and served in the state legislature as a young man; from 1904 to 1918 he served in the United States Congress and often entertained important southern Democratic leaders at his home on the outskirts of Woodbury.

All of the sudden, the Allegheny County Courthouse -- long the bastion of partisan politics, mostly Democratic -- seems to be going independent, at least in some of the top ranks.
County Manager Glenn Cannon, a top confidant to Cranmer, switched his registration from Democrat, his affiliation since 1975, to independent April 19, the deadline for making such a change.

While Cannon County as a whole was more "anti secession" than the rest of middle Tennessee (the vote in DeKalb was 833 for and 642 against secession), it's quite likely that many of the men in the northern section were influenced by Stokes, a resident of Temperance Hall, and a congressman.
While the total number of Cannon County men joining this regiment is not clear, some indication can be found in the 1890 census showed that some 137 veterans or their widows in Cannon were drawing Union army pensions.
