Note: Cannons are made of various materials, as iron, brass, bronze, and steel, and of various sizes and shapes with respect to the special service for which they are intended, as intended, as siege, seacoast, naval, field, or mountain, guns.
Formerly they were cast hollow, afterwards they were cast, solid, and bored out The cannon now most in use for the armament of war vessels and for seacoast defense consists of a forged steel tube reinforced with massive steel rings shrunk upon it Howitzers and mortars are sometimes called cannon.

 cannon - definition by dict.die.net
Cannon ball, strictly, a round solid missile of stone or iron made to be fired from a cannon, but now often applied to a missile of any shape, whether solid or hollow, made for cannon.
Cannon pinion, the pinion on the minute hand arbor of a watch or clock, which drives the hand but permits it to be moved in setting.
Note: Guns are classified, according to their construction or manner of loading as rifled or smoothbore, breech-loading or muzzle-loading, cast or built-up guns; or according to their use, as field, mountain, prairie, seacoast, and siege guns.

 The Motion Works - TimeZone
In watches with a Zenith construction, the conventional cannon pinion cannot, of course, be attached to the pinion of the center wheel because the center wheel (or great wheel) is not in the center of the watch and therefore cannot carry the minute hand.
Cannon pinion friction often needs to be raised by slightly renewing the friction crimp during service, as shown in the illustration at left.
Low friction may also create slippage between cannon pinion and the great wheel pinion during normal running to the point that timekeeping appears to be erratic: the movement may be running at regular rate, but the cannon pinion--and thus the minute hand, minute wheel, hour wheel, and hour hand--will not remain with the movement.

Watch Repair - Motion Work, Hands, And Dials
Rough cannon pinions are bought, and require fitting to the centre arbor; the outside has to be turned to fit the hour wheel, and the top cut to length or squared to fit the minute hand.
Modern keyless English levers generally have cannon pinion 14, minute wheel 28, minute pinion 8, hour wheel 48 ; and the minute wheel is of steel for strength, as the hands are set through it.
A cannon pinion that does not turn upon its arbor when the hands are set may be tightened by inserting a hair from the watch brush and pushing the pinion on tight.

 Motion work
In English watches, even of the best class, the minute pinion usually runs on a brass stud which is driven rather carelessly into the pillar plate, a construction which is completely unworthy of the character and the generally careful execution of these watches.
The minute pinion has a small projecting pipe which is left standing beyond the rivet and serves to hold the minute wheel a small distance above the plate; the other end of the minute pinion also has a small pipe which is turned down so that it has just the necessary shake under the dial.
Besides, this arrangement has the advantage that the end shake of the hour wheel can be adjusted between the front surface of the cannon pinion and the lower end of the minute hand pipe so that it does not require the small spring washer which we normally use to hold the hour wheel in place.

How does an Up/Down Indicator Watch Work?
It would then be possible to revolve the wheel H, the wheel D and the pinion E freely around the stationary pinion C, but E is still in engagement with the wheel F which is mounted on the arbor of the up-and-down hand, and this wheel is not in engagement with any other.
Then the pinion E, which is solid with D, must make the same number of turns; E also engages with F. Let us examine the movement of E and F, removing the pinion C. Consider that the wheel B and the pinion C are removed, and that the wheel H is revolved.
The movement of the pinion E and the wheel F is retarded by the rolling of E around fin this case the point X’ in 15/16 of a turn of the wheel H does not go as far as Y’ but ends up at Z on the radius VZ.

An offset cannon pinion typically drives the minute wheel (of the motion works) and applies power directly to the intermediate wheels in the keyless works, which can be a source of drag and stoppage in neglected or over lubricated movements.
A small center seconds pinion with it's own bridge lies underneath the outermost sweep of the rotor and is driven by the third wheel directly (unlike the traditional indirect center seconds layout where an auxiliary third wheel is used).
The center seconds pinion is tensioned slightly by a thin copper washer (very similar to a dial washer) to reduce the jerky motion sometimes exhibited by indirect seconds movements.

 Cleaning Watches
The cannon pinion is pushed friction tight on to the centre arbor, which carries the minute hand and passes through the hollow centre pinion.
If the arbor projects through the cannon pinion, hold the watch in the hand, and give a smart tap with the hammer and' it will probably go through.
Then lift off the top plate and remove the fusee and wheels, etc. The cannon pinion can be removed from the centre arbor by grasping its square in a pair of cutting nippers and pulling or twisting, holding the centre wheel tight in the mean time.

 Borresen's Patent
The cannon pinion for the second hand is equivalent to the pinion on the fourth wheel in the watch train.
The cannon pinion carrying the second hand is highly polished steel and the hour hand cannon pinion is polished brass.
When the second hand and hour hand are reversed, the second hand cannon pinion lies between the center arbor carrying the minute hand and the hour hand cannon pinion and therefore has two friction surfaces rather than one.

In order to get our cannon pinion and hour wheel to rotate about the same point, we need to make sure that the radius of the cannon pinion plus the minute wheel is the same as the radius of the minute pinion plus the hour wheel.
Since commercial pinion cutters are designed to cut a certain number of teeth, it would be a great help to use the same number of teeth in the minute pinion as is used elsewhere in the movement-- that way we would only need one pinion cutter.

The Girard Perregaux Vintage 1945 Large Date Moonphase
The second intermediate handsetting wheel (the first handsetting wheel is on a rocker in the keyless works) turns a wheel underneath the minutes pinion (not really a cannon pinion as it is free floating on its post) which turns a wheel underneath the minute wheel.
The cannon pinion drives the minute wheel, which pivots on a spring-loaded post, ensuring maximum engagement with the minutes pinion and hour wheel when turning counterclockwise (when the watch is running or the hands are being set forwards) and minimum engagement when turning clockwise (when setting the hands backwards).
The lower pinion on this wheel drives a reduction wheel, whose pinion in turn drives a transfer wheel with a jeweled hub, held to the underside of the bridge with a friction fit post.

When removing the metal carrier you should remove the minute disc only but it might happen that the hour disc will be removed as well together with the cannon pinion.
Also NOTE that the red hour mark on the dial should be placed centrally to match a small punch mark in the middle of the movement plate.

On a side note, interestingly the sweep seconds pinion in this particular variant of the JR 1000 only serves the purpose of connecting the two third wheel parts - due to the small seconds module, the sweep center seconds pinion is "blind".
The connection between module and third wheel is achieved by use of a pinion; this pinion is connected to the base movement through a small hole in the mainplate at approximately 11.30 position and close to the hour wheel (green arrow on picture detail picture 20)
The canon pinion is executed as a "free" canon, as it is not directly fitted to the center wheel by friction.

When the second hand continues to run while the minute and hour hands are stopped, it generally indicates that the cannon pinion is too loose.
The reason this happens at ~10:30 pm is because that is when the dial train begins to carry the calendar mechanism in anticipation of the date change, and apparently the extra drag is enough to cause the cannon pinion to start to slip.
There's nothing for it but to tighten the cannon pinion, but this requires a partial disassembly at the very least and it's possible RM will want to give it a complete overhaul just to be sure everything else is perfect.

This is the tube that the cannon pinion rides on, which transfers the rotation of the center wheel to the motion work.
The motion train is a series of four gears that mount on the outside of the clock plate, which convert 12 turns of the cannon pinion (which the minute hand is attached to) into 1 turn of the hour wheel (which the hour hand is atached to).
The cannon pinion is going to be pretty tricky, since in order to allow the clock to be set it has to be a friction fit on the center pinion.

Replica Watch Report Guide to Replica Watches - Panerai Short Cannon Pinion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
One of the easiest ways to detect most modern Panerai replicas is the short cannon pinion, or the pin that holds the hands to the watch.
The cannon pinion on many replicas is too short, leaving a noticable indentation where the hands attach to the movement.
Here's the basic issue, the cannon and hour wheels on the PAM's are too short, causing a big hole in the center of the hour hand, hands at angles to clear the running seconds, and just a bad arrangement - in an otherwise nice watch.

Frequent setting shouldn't be a problem unless there is a calendar involved which requires way too much setting and wear on the cannon pinion.
As long as cannon pinions are well lubricated, they'll slip for a long time without suffering damage, or causing it.
This usually causes them to either: (A.) bind up and strip out the setting pinion and/or clutch, or (B.) ream out the center of the cannon pinion so that it loses its tension.
