Downstream from Faribault the most common species are smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and, in the stretch below Cannon Falls, Minnesota, channel catfish.

In May of 2003, the Rivers of Life program brought together a crew of seven students to learn on, and teach about, the Mississippi River.
From May 12-16, more than 400 K-12 students from the Cannon River Watershed traveled to the Mississippi River for one-day interdisciplinary investigations into their relationships to the river.
They were instucted by the Rivers of Life students and a team of geologists, naturalists, hydrologists, Native American elders, musicians, storytellers, birders, river pilots and other content specialists to explore the river.

In Herbert Buck's Book Early Fur Trading on the Cannon River in Rice County Minnesota, it says; Alexander Faribault, long a prominent factor in the American Fur Company, began trading at the Bois Plume, on the Cannon River in 1826.
In April of 1855, Jonathan and Walter Morris came west along the Cannon River from Faribault in search of mill power.
Legend has it that during the civil war the Minnesota 1st Militia got mired down in the mud and could not save the cannon while crossing the Cannon river before it was dammed up to create the lake as it exists today,.
