Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley (September 15, 1928 - August 8, 1975), originally from Tampa, Florida, was a jazz saxophonist of the small combo era of the 1950s and 1960s.
Cannonball was a local legend in Florida until he moved to New York in 1955.
The nickname "Cannonball" was a corruption of "cannibal", a childhood nickname for the portly saxophonist.

The only student who was not playing a cannonball in my section was playing a Yamaha custom Z alto.
I can say that the cannonball was richer, had more soul, and played with better intonation than the Z. The Yamaha had terrible pitch problems in the upper register and was stuffy down low.

The real Cannonball Run (The Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Run) was a 1970's race actually run on public highways between the Red Ball Garage in New York City and the Portofino Inn in Redondo Beach, California.
The only character we seem to be lacking in Cannonball Run II in order to cause a spontaneous celluloid meltdown is Eric Von Zipper, although now that I think about it, Burt & Crew get so sidetracked with schlock that they have to finish 90% of the race with animation.
Cannonball Run II is so baaaad it's worth a look just for the exercise your neck will get from shaking your head from side-to-side.
