  Cannonball Adderly
Cannonball Adderly is one of my very favorite saxophone players because his playing is filled with emotion.
Adderly teamed up with his coronet-playing brother, Nat, to form a popular quintet during the 1960s.
Cannonball Adderly died of a stroke in 1975.

 Cannonball adderley somethin else
Julian Cannonball Adderley, the leader of the group that remains so ardently aflame throughout these sides, is an alto saxophonist cast in the Charlie Parker bop mold.
Both Cannonball and Miles agree that there has been far too much labeling of jazz-men, that there is an almost limitless degree of overlapping between schools, and that what counts is not the branding of the music but the cohesive quality of their concerted efforts.
Cannonball's solo on this track is perhaps the most typical of all in the set: the big, round sound, the Parker-oriented phrasing and harmonic sense, consistently interesting linear development all are in evidence.

 Nat Adderly Biography
Nat Adderly was born November 25, 1931 the younger brother of Julian "Cannonball" Adderly.
When Cannonball rejected the trumpet (bought by their father, who played professionally) in favor of the saxophone, Nat picked up the trumpet.
Cannonball, showing confidence and nerve, made his way to the stage and played with bassist Oscar Pettiford, drummer Kenny Clark, and pianist Horace Silver and proved his mettle.

Adderly worked as a band director at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from 1948 until shortly after his appearance at the Bohemia, when he and brother Nat formed a quintet and began to tour.
Cannonball's playing on classic Davis sessions like Milestones reveal a new discipline in the use of space and silence as well as a more adventurous harmonic ear.
However, Cannonball's distinctive tone and strong sense of thematic development are in evidence and help to distinguish the solo as his.

 Cannonball Adderley - Jazz - Randy's Rodeo
Cannonball Adderley was an expansive and personable bandleader, fond of ingratiating, spoken introductions; together with his easygoing musical style, this made him one of the most popular jazzmen of his day.
Adderley's 1955 debut, Presenting Julian Cannonball Adderley, was on Savoy; this and other early hard bop sessions (with an all-star rhythm section of Kenny Clarke and Paul Chambers) are sampled on Timeless or any number of other Savoy reissues.
This was followed quickly in 1959 by Cannonball And Coltrane (released on Emarcy, and later remastered as Quintet In Chicago), a magnificent jam with Adderley's mates from the 1959 Davis sextet, including John Coltrane and Wynton Kelly.

While the group struggled economically, Cannonball did draw the attention of Miles Davis, who featured the alto saxophonist in the immortal Miles Davis sextet (alongside John Coltrane and either Red Garland, Bill Evans, or Wynton Kelly) for two years beginning in late 1957.
In September 1959, Cannonball left Davis and reunited with Nat in a new Cannonball Adderley quintet.
At the heart of the group's success throughout its existence were Cannonball, one of the most impassioned alto (and, later, soprano) saxophonists in jazz history, and Nat, whose infectious compositions (including "Work Song" and "Jive Samba") formed a critical part of the band's book.

While "Cannonball" worked as a teacher at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale and Nat attended Florida AandM University, the two brothers drove up to New York City during the summer of 1955 where their lives were changed forever.
During the sixties the Adderly Quintet enjoyed even greater popularity with their pianist Joe Zawinul's composition, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." Using the blues as an eternal touchstone, the band thrived in spite of rock 'n' roll's ever-increasing dominance of the airwaves.
After Cannonball Adderly's death in 1975, Nat went on to work with his own quintets and participated in other musical settings including an exciting group he led with trombonist J.J. Johnson.

Both as the leader of his own bands as well as an alto and soprano saxophone stylist, Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderly was one of the progenitors of the swinging, rhythmically robust style of music that became known as hard-bop.
Adderly’s direct style on alto was indebted to the biting clarity of Charlie Parker, but it also significantly drew from the warm, rounded tones of Benny Carter; hard swingers such as Louis Jordan and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson were important influences as well.
Adderly became a seminal influence on the hard-driving style known as hard-bop, and could swing ferociously at faster tempos, yet he was also an effective and soulful ballad stylist.

CD Review of Cannonball Adderley - Cannonball Plays Zawinul on Capitol @ jazzreview.com
Julian “Cannonball” Adderley refined a brand of instrumental music known as “soul jazz.” Adderley’s alto sax was the fire in the engine of his quintets and sextets, an engine that grooved down the bumpy blue highways of the recently desegregated South.
Cannonball Plays Zawinul, released this past year, is a compilation of 10 of the keyboardist’s maps taken from eight albums Cannonball cut for Capitol Records between 1961 and 1971.
No Cannonball Adderley album is complete without a little of the saxophonist’s patter: His voice is as resonant and distinctive as his horn as he introduces one of the songs he and Zawinul were best known for, a straight-ahead version of “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.”

As members of Miles Davis's immortal Kind of Blue-era sextet, saxophonists Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and John Coltrane were an inspired combination, with Cannon's dancing, bebop-inspired alto lines offering a lighter (but by no means insubstantial) counterpoint to Trane's booming, restlessly exploring tenor.
In both his playing and his interview with Gleason, Cannonball offers a swinging clinic on the role of the blues in post-bop jazz.
The beauty of this one is that it is the earliest available recording, from 1961, and the only of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet (the other 3 are all sextet).

Cannonball Adderly wasn't widely identified with the bossa nova craze of the early sixties, but the evidence on this disc, a reissue of his 1962 recording for the Riverside label, shows that it wasn't for lack of trying.

For his entry into the bossa nova sweepstakes, Cannonball chose to record with an established group of young Brazilians which included Durval Ferreira on guitar, Octavio Bailly, Jr.

The LP release was a two record set, reuniting Adderly with producer Orrin Keepnews, who had been at the helm of some of Cannonball's greatest soul jazz hits.
Cannonball Adderly was only 46 years old at the time, and there was no reason to believe that there wouldn't be plenty of time for reunions and retrospectives in the future.
That he happened to record this album at the time he did is an accident of history, but a happy accident for the legions of fans he left behind.

Granted, this event at Newport featuring George Shearing (piano) and Cannonball Adderly (alto sax) with his brother Nat (trumpet) was exceptional to begin with, and when you have something of quality to work with when you start the remastering process, the result is that musical legends become more real and alive.
Both band leader's quintets getting together for some sparkling and innovative improvisation is what this genre lives for, it is the heartbeat of jazz to create live music such as this.
This was the golden age of jazz, the 50's and all its glory came to a peak of musical intelligence that has not been matched since men such as Adderly and Shearing stepped on stage to perform.

When alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley culled together this quartet, he grabbed three champions from seemingly disparate schools to complement his flinty solos: Miles Davis, the king of cool; Art Blakey, the thundering force of hard bop; Hank Jones, a veteran of swing; and Sam Jones, a versatile bassist adaptable to nearly any setting.
Every track's performance is a highlight, but Cannonball's playing is particularly inspired, especially his soulful blues soaked soloing on Dancing in the dark, and boppish flight on One For Daddy-O. Miles is dramatic, soulful, vulnerable, and sultry all at once.
Nat Adderly is adept and versatile on this disc, showing his ability to integrate and utilize superb and diverse musicians for a cohesive uniform sound throughout the disc.
