In agriculture, Canola is a trademarked cultivar of the rapeseed plant from which rapeseed oil is obtained.
Rapeseed oil was produced in the 19th century as a source of a lubricant for steam engines.
Canola has been bred to reduce the amount of glucosinolates and erucic acid, yielding a palatable oil.

 Canola (Rapeseed)
Canola is usually seeded with the small seed attachment of a grain drill to a depth of 1/2 to 1 inch.
For spring canola, it should be broadcast and incorporated at seeding time along with the P and K. For winter canola, nitrogen may be best applied as a split application using starter nitrogen application of about 10-20 lbs/acre, followed by the remainder in the spring prior to regrowth.
Canola should be cut high on the stem and lightly pushed into the stubble with a windrower to prevent blowing.

Rapeseed is in the Brassica family and is related to broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.
Spring rapeseed generally is planted in March to April with an anticipated August to September harvest.
Rapeseed can be direct combined; however, to reduce the risk of shatter, swath the crop when the bottom pods are brown, and the pods at the top of the plant green but well-filled.

In both rat and chicken experiments treatment effects were assessed by measuring feed consumption and growth performance throughout the feeding trials and by determining organ weights, plasma thyroid hormone levels and levels of glutathione and xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes in liver tissue of representative animals sacrificed at the termination of the trials.
Canola meals were added at 30% of the diet in both experiments and the glucosinolate levels varied from a low of 5.3 to a high of 10.1 Fmol/g indole glucosinolates and from a low of 5.2 to a high of 15.9 Fmol/g of aliphatic glucosinolates.
Responses were noted in weight gain and feed consumption among rats fed canola meal diets varying in glucosinolate amount and type (aliphatic vs indole) and the effects were associated, to a large degree, with the content of aliphatic glucosinolates (Tables 1 and 2).

Rapeseed has gained market share at the expense of soybeans for a variety of different reasons, which include the development of improved Canadian rapeseed varieties, Japan's liberalization of its meat imports, and the availability of low-priced soybean meal on world markets, particularly from China.
Before 1970, rapeseed oil contained high levels of erucic acid and rapeseed meal had high amounts of glucosinolates, which were shown to be harmful to animals and possibly to humans as well.
Rapeseed meal has a lower protein content, lower levels of metabolizable energy, and more than twice as much crude fibers as soybean meal (13 percent fiber for rapeseed meal versus 6 percent for soybean meal).

Comment: An insurance service organization recommended that the conversion of the canola and rapeseed pilot program to a permanent crop insurance program be deferred until the 1999 crop year since it is preferable for changes to be effective the same year for fall and spring.
Deferring the canola and rapeseed pilot program conversion until the 1999 crop year would delay the expansion of the canola and rapeseed insurance coverage to additional counties.
Since the majority of canola and rapeseed producers are in counties with a March 15 sales closing date, converting the pilot program for 1998 spring crops will allow FCIC to meet its goal of converting the pilot program to a permanent program for most producing areas for the 1998 crop year.

Removal of pyrophosphate by overexpression of an inorganic pyrophosphatase (Ppase) was attempted to elevate sucrose levels of canola seedlings in response to low temperatures.
Introducing an inorganic pyrophosphatase (ppase) could potentially increase the flow of carbon towards sucrose by influencing two pyrophosphate producing reactions leading to sucrose synthesis, pyrophosphate: fructose-6-phosphate-1-transferase, and UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase and by enhancing the export of triose phosphate from the chloroplast.
To these ends, an inorganic pyrophosphatase (ppa) gene was overexpressed in canola in an attempt to enhance freezing tolerance.
