  Timeline: Star Trek
Thus, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was rushed at great expense (and somewhat unfinished) into theaters to a decent box office gross but an underwhelming reaction by both critics and fans to the movie itself (particularly in the wake of the enormously popular and faster-tempo Star Wars).
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan exploded into theaters and became one of the most beloved and successful Star Trek movies of all time (the debate goes on between fans about which is better: 2, 4 or 6?).
Star Trek: Voyager would return to the bridge of a Starfleet vessel, with a couple twists: the captain would be a woman (Kate Mulgrew), the crew mixed between rebel and Starfleet personnel (and a holographic doctor!), and the ship accidentally shot into another part of the galaxy and would be seeking a way home.

Star Trek II, IV, VI and Star Trek: First Contact are usually considered the fan-favorites, while Star Trek I and V are usually at the bottom (though I has since received quite a bit of positive re-evaluation in the wake of an acclaimed "Director's Edition" revision released on DVD).
Currently, Star Trek: Hidden Frontier which is a continuation of the timeline after the Dominion War, from the perspective of the a station and fleet in the Briar Patch as well as Star Trek: New Voyages, a "continuation" of the original Star Trek, are prominent fan series.

Certainly the canonical fictional universe is not supposed to be as authoritative as the teachings of a church.
While the canonicity of some events in the movies (obviously because of fan reactions to "Star Trek V") is suddenly questioned, TAS is said to be slated to become canon (because of a recent fan vote at startrek.com).
Star Trek writers are expected to be creative and not perfect librarians (something that is largely left to the fans today after Richard Arnold and later the Okudas used to fill that role).

Star Trek Animated - The Series that ran from 1973 - 1974
Star Trek Animated - The series was aired under the name Star Trek, but it has become widely known as Star Trek: The Animated Series (or abbreviated as ST:TAS or TAS).
This canonical definition is often overlooked because it is quite beyond present-day technology and devoting hours of study to it would violate the basic premise of Star Trek: it's supposed to be fun.
Trek regulars James Doohan and Majel Barrett performed virtually all of the "guest star" characters in the series, except for a few notable exceptions (Sarek, Cyrano Jones and Harcourt Fenton Mudd, who were performed by their original actors from The Original Series).

And, we'd be remiss for not mentioning a bit of a 'canon rebellion' still in play by some fans who reject the concept of canon (or specifically all canon produced after circa 1980) on the grounds that it steps on the toes of their preferred 70's-era Trek fandom speculations.
She also noted that Tim Gaskill was a "Star Trek expert" who used to work for her at VCP, implying that he would be in a unique position to be aware of both the Paramount and the old VCP position on canon.

TOS: "Space Seed" and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan gave the date for the Wars as the 1990s, but DS9: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume" was thought by some to have retconned that date with a reference to them having occurred two centuries prior to the events of that episode.
It has also been speculated that the Eugenics Wars were fought and won in secret, which could explain instances in Star Trek canon that do not directly support their existence during the 1990s.

The point here is that, really, because Star Trek is about exploring space and spacefaring characters, the franchise hasn’t cared to examine the more routine lifestyles, the mundane aspects of daily life.
The losers in society aren’t getting much exposure on Star Trek, and maybe that’s because they don’t make for the kind of Trek stories most people are thirsting for.

Too much of Star Trek depends on several assumptions: (1) that spacefaring races are humanoid in nature, (2) that such races achieved roughly the same level of technology at roughly the same time, and (3) humanity is the decisive historical force in the cosmos.

Once upon a time in fandom, the eternal question was "who's a better captain, Kirk or Picard?" Since then, the addition of Deep Space Nine and Voyager to Star Trek canon has complicated the debate, and some longtime Trekkers might find the new answers surprising.
Of the people responding to a recent "Who is the best Star Trek captain?" poll on the site, a full third -- more than 2,000 -- voted for Sisko, leading some to suspect that a particularly obsessive fan had stuffed the electronic ballotbox.
Voyager's Kathryn Janeway, the only female commanding officer to lead her own Star Trek incarnation so far, trailed far behind with only 7 percent of the votes.
