This was a first for Canon, although other manufacturers including Contax (with its G series of interchangeable-lens 35 mm compact cameras) and Olympus (with its Four Thirds digital SLR system) have followed Canon's lead.
The Canon EOS series helped begin in the digital SLR age with the EOS DCS 3 in 1995, although it was a joint collaborative effort with Kodak.
Canon's naming scheme for its EOS cameras has been pretty haphazard, and thus the target market segment of a particular camera is not immediately obvious to a new EOS consumer.

Not since February 2002 (the EOS D60) has Canon increased the resolution of this line of digital SLRs, in the EOS 20D we have a 1.9 million effective pixel increase, a new AF system, 50% faster continuous shooting and more than double the buffer space.
Gone are some of the annoyances of the EOS 10D, the 20D now switches on virtually instantly and focuses quickly, it feels very solid and yet weighs slightly less than the model it replaces.

 Canon EOS-1V
It's a pun on the fact that this is Canon's fourth pro-bodied EOS and therefore deserves the appellation of a Roman numeral IV, and of course it continues the use of the number 1 for their flagship body.
According to a Canon U.S. press release the EOS-1V SLR camera will be available in two configurations: body only and also as a kit with Power Drive Booster PB-E2 (called the EOS-1V HS) at camera retailers in April at suggested list prices of $2,900 and $3,400 respectively.
The EOS Link Software Connection accessory will be available in the second half of the year and will have a suggested list price of $250.

I was impressed by the 6.3 megapixel Canon EOS 10D I saw at the PMA show in Las Vegas in early March, 2003.
Canon announced its replacement for the 10D: the EOS-20D.
Maybe Canon hasn't come out with one because it's not as sexy as their new EF 70-300 mm DO IS USM ($1300; 720 grams-- remarkably light and short) or EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L IS USM ($2500; 1670 grams).

The EOS 20D maximum flash sync voltage is 250v (for both the hotshoe and PC terminal), the Digital Rebel XT maximum sync voltage is also 250v, not 6v as I had earlier reported.
Canon have recently stated that the Digital Rebel XT does in fact share the 250v sync voltage with the 20D and other high end Canon EOS bodies.
The EOS 20D is designed more for the serious amateur and professional who work their cameras harder and expect them to do more.

On 20th August 2003 Canon dropped a bomb into the digital SLR market with the six megapixel sub-$1,000 EOS 300D (Digital Rebel).
