 Canon 50mm f/1.2L
Canon was one of the pioneers of the so-called "super-speed" lenses.
The Canon new FD 50mm f/1.2L is the descendent of the 55mm f/1.2 SSC.
The new FD 50mm 1.2 is somewhat of an enigma in the world of super-speed lenses in that it is actually not much larger or heavier than slower lenses of the same focal length.

The FD version shows a slight improvement in the outer zones, but overall both versions perform identical. There is no decentring: always a good sign of outstanding workmanship in manufacturing and quality control.
Canon FD 1.4/50 SSC and New FD 1.4/50mm
The new FD is shorter, more compact and has less weight: to have the same performance as the larger predecessor is qute good and overall the performance is better than most films could deliver in those days.

Although Canon itself made an adapter that simply converted one lens flange to another infinity focus was lost.
Sadly this is not possible because the FD flange to film distance is shorter than the EF to film distance.

Canon FD lens mount - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1973, two years after the FD mount was introduced Canon started using the Super Spectra Coating (SSC) on its lenses and marked them with "SSC" on the lens.
Canon did however manufacture a single lens containing a lens-integral autofocus system — the FD 35-70 mm f/4 AF.

Canon's FD mount replaced the Canon FL mount in 1971 when they introduced the F-1 and FTb.
In 1976, Canon introduced the "New FD" mount, which now offered a bayonet style mount while still remaining compatible with existing breechlock lenses.
The shallow body depth of R, FL, and FD mounts makes it easy to mount other manufacturers' lenses using adapters without losing the ability to focus at infinity.

CameraHobby - Canon AE-1 Program Review
By Canon’s claims the AE1 was wildly successful and from what I can see of the used bins and in the Buy and Sell papers, the AE1 seems to be the most prolific offering from Canon’s FD mount bodies.
Canon lenses mount on the body in the opposite direction of Nikon lenses, probably by explicit choice of Canon to be different from Nikon and probably why Shutter Speed priority seems to be so favored in these older Canons.
Canon lenses have a locking ring around the base of the lens that need to be properly aligned and then this ring is rotated clockwise to lock onto the body.

 Canon FTb
The Canon FTb is a manual focus SLR that was introduced by Canon, Inc. in March of 1971.
Canon revised the FTb in 1973, many people call it the FTbn for 'new' although it is only marked FTb on the body.
The name 'Canon' comes from the Buddhist deity Kwanon and early Canon cameras were actually spelled 'Kwanon' and the lenses were named 'Kyasapa' after another deity.

Canon EOD lens adapter for FD lens :: PBase Forum
Canon FD lenses are manual-focus only lenses which Canon sold in the years before switching over to the autofocus EF system.
Canon’s optic-containing FD-lens-on-EOS-body adapters were basically small teleconverters (1.26x) and only worked properly with a number of their longer telephoto lenses - effectively transforming them into longer slower lenses - you lost 2/3 stop.
Canon and others also made FD lens to EOS body adapters which do not contain optics, but as noted above, you lose infinity focus and so such simple metal ring adapters are really only useful for closeup applications.

Canon EOS Lenses - Using Manual Focus Lenses on Canon EOS Bodies
Lenses shown in red (which includes all Canon FD and earlier lenses) cannot be mounted on an EOS body and still reach infinity focus without some intermediate optics.
Canon have actually made two adapters for mounting Canon FD mount lenses on an EOS body.
Some people suggest that the manual focus Zeiss 21mm f2.8 is significantly better than the Canon 20/2.8 or any of the wideangle zooms which cover 21mm, and is, in fact, one of the very best wideangles available, especially in terms of corner and edge sharpness.

The FD line-up is probably not exactly a system to get old with - nonetheless it may be still interesting for beginners to learn photography and there're numerous users who are still happy with the FD philosophy.
Canon FD equipment is not exactly cheap - especially L lenses and the T90 are still very popular and therefore quite expensive on the used market.
And from the viewpoint of Canon the FD line-up is definately a dead system - there's no doubt about it.

Canon fd to eos inifinity focus - Hack A Day
Adapters to mount older fd mount canon lenses onto the newer eos cameras have been around for a while.

The Canon A-Series and T-Series SLR cameras
The success of the EOS System had also resulted in Canon putting a stop to further research and development and eventually the total discontinuation on all of its manual focus cameras utilizing the breech-lock FD-mount.
The FD lens mount, introduced concurrently with the original Canon F-1 camera of 1971, was an evolutionary advancement over the previous FL mount.
But since detailed information and resources available for these Canon SLR cameras are quite scarce on the Net, I am just trying my best to kick-start the whole event rolling with a personal project that took almost 4 months to construct (I am not that productive after all...).

In these, the whole lens barrel rotated to perform the locking action, and the lens barrel was all fl; Canon's Super Spectra Coating was now standard on all lenses except for the 50 mm f/1.8, and the lens markings no longer specified it.
