	Canon (music) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Old French canon, which meant 'learned', was taken from the Greek kanon for a rule or law, which eventually came to mean 'an accepted rule' in English, and the term was first used for the rule that describes how the voices relate to each others.
		Many such canons were composed during the Renaissance, particularly in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries; Johannes Ockeghem wrote an entire mass (the Missa Prolationum) in which each section is a mensuration canon, and all at different speeds and entry intervals.
		The most popular canons heard today are from the Baroque period, such as Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D (Pachelbel's Canon) or every third variation in Bach's Goldberg Variations.

		The Canon in D major (full German title: Kanon und Gigue in D-Dur für drei Violinen und Basso Continuo or Canon and Gigue in D major for three Violins with Bass Acompanyment) is the most famous piece of music by Johann Pachelbel.
		The name Canon in D is slightly misleading because the piece is not a strict canon but rather a chaconne or a passacaglia.
		The canon was first adapted musically in a pop song by the Spanish vocal group Pop Tops on their 1968 hit "O Lord, Why Lord?", which made modest chart showings in both the USA (peaking at #79 on the Hot 100) and the Netherlands.

		Pachelbel's Canon in D is my very favorite piece of music, so when I received this CD as an "early Christmas present" I was really happy.
		Track four, variations of the Canon performed by the Concord String Quartet was a surprise to me. I thought I would love it because I love string quartets, but the variations were just "too varied" and they made Pachelbel's Canon, at its heart, uplifting and joyous, sound more like a funeral dirge.
		Of course, everybody loves Pachelbel's Canon in D. There is no question about it - it is a great piece of music.

		I like classical music, and Canon is among my favorites, so the fact that it was tracked at all is a good thing..
		What it sounds like me is that somebody found some low quality synthy samples and grabbed the sheet music and just churned it out.
		I love the soft, stringy, flowing melody of Pachabel's canon, and what I'm hearing here is a half-assed rendition being played by 3 8-bit samples that give me a headache.
