Canonero II, (1969-1981), was a champion thoroughbred (thoroughbred: A racehorse belonging to a breed that originated from a cross between Arabian stallions and English mares) race horse (race horse: A horse bred for racing).
Bred by Edward B. Benjamin in Kentucky (Kentucky: A state in east central United States; a border state during the American Civil War; famous for breeding race horses), the bay colt was born with a noticeably crooked foreleg, and as such was considered to have no future in racing.
Because of his breeding, Canonero II qualified for the Kentucky Derby (Kentucky Derby: An annual race for three-year-old horses; held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky), the most prestigious event in United States thoroughbred horse racing.
