Prior to completion of the Canso Causeway in 1955, a tidal difference of about 1 m between the northern and southern portions of the Strait gave rise to strong currents with a strong net water flow southward.
The quieter current regime is prone to deposition of fine-grained sediments resulting in a change from an erosional environment which saw the development of sandwaves and erosional flutes, to a depositional environment with the accumulation of fine-grained sediments at rates in the range of 1 to 2 mm per year.
Southeast of the Canso Causeway, seafloor photographs and samples confirm that much of the seafloor is covered by a thin veneer of fine sediments with a dense population of the deposit-feeding brittle star Ophiura sarsi.
